I work in IT in south Alabama. There are major network outages being reported by cell carriers, such as AT&T and Verizon. Other carriers are reporting it too. The maps show all of the Eastern seaboard from just south of Maine all the way to the bottom of Florida and the southeast United States plus major parts of California and Nebraska. We don't know exactly what is going on and I am not trying to alarm anyone but this is what I know at this point.

    KPBS-FM ^ | May 2, 2017 | Yuki Noguchi, NPR
With unemployment low and economic growth expected to bounce back from a slow first quarter, consumers are not in bad shape. But it has been an especially terrible year so far for retailers. Nine U.S. chains have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Store closures are accelerating, and almost 90,000 retail workers have lost their jobs since October. Experts say the industry's troubles are just beginning. "The disruption is just unfolding," says Mark Cohen, a former CEO of Sears Canada who now directs retail studies at Columbia Business School. "I think the number of store closings will continue at an...

There is a growing evidence that robots and artificial intelligence could displace huge swaths of the American workforce....

  • Six things your kids need to know in order to be well-educated. (RE: Black children)

    ThyBlackMan ^ | April 29, 2017 | Dr. Boyce Watkins
I’ve long observed the state of black children with deep concern. It seems that with all the billions of dollars being spent to educate children in urban areas, this money is going to waste. This waste appears to be a mixture of good old government inefficiency, apathetic parents, and teachers who don’t care much about our children. But spreading the blame doesn’t actually solve the problem. While we are sitting around trying to figure out who destroyed our children, the little ones are left to languish in the stench of inherited ignorance. We live in an age of information, where...

Hon Hai Chairman Terry Gou was seen exiting the White House Thursday after a reported meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. The billionaire Taiwanese tech mogul refused to confirm meeting Trump, telling reporters in English: "My memory is not good; maybe I already forgot," according to the Central News Agency. White House officials did not respond immediately to questions regarding the reported meeting. Rumors of a possible meet between Gou and Trump surfaced Thursday when the Nikkei Asian Review quoted unnamed sources familiar with the plan. That report also indicated that Gou met with Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner in late...

When 4chan users are not busy sharing and discussing anime pornography, they can be some of the most efficient crowdsourcing researchers on the web. The /pol/ board in particular was able to find the exact location of an ISIS camp just by clues in a recruitment video. Their research reportedly led to a successful airstrike on the location. Their new research obsession is antifa, the loose group of anti-fascists, consisting of communists and anarchists, who’ve been wreaking havoc in the Trump era. Unemployment is a serious pain point in America for both employers short on good talent and talent short on employment, so Sprint has announced that they’re going to take another step in their own fight against unemployment by expanding out to 79 new retail locations in Texas, which will create at least 550 jobs. The jobs that will be created by this move aren’t limited to retail salespeople and managers; more technical roles will also be brought on board, which means that the larger number of stores will represent an expansion in Sprint’s overall footprint for the state. FRESNO, Calif. -- Acoustic sensors mounted on lampposts and telephone poles picked up the crack of gunfire and rapidly enabled police to zero in on where it was coming from. Within minutes, the alleged gunman in the deadly rampage was under arrest. Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer credited the technology Wednesday with the swift capture of Kori Ali Muhammad, a 39-year-old black man who authorities say killed three people Tuesday in a bid to wipe out as many whites as possible. "He was in custody within 4 minutes and 13 seconds," Dyer said Wednesday at a news conference where he...

SAN FRANCISCO (CNNMoney) -- Sally doesn't clean, chop or toss vegetables. The new salad robot making its debut in San Francisco this month is more like a salad vending machine: Press a few buttons on a touchscreen and it drops neat portions of refrigerated ingredients into a bowl. But Sally the Salad Robot could be the latest step in automating some of the more repetitive parts of food preparation. Its creators hope food robots can help with one of Silicon Valley's biggest restaurant problems: a shortage of kitchen workers. Sally is the first product from Chowbotics, a Redwood City startup...
