The current debt ceiling "crisis" has highlighted the fundamental difference between two philosophies of government. The majority of Democrats would like to increase revenue, or as most taxpayers would say, increase taxes. Republicans for the most part would like to cut government spending. Controlling only one house of the legislature put Republicans at a distinct disadvantage. In the recent budget battle they were able to pass a 38 billion dollar reduction, a pitiful amount considering the multi trillion dollar budget. But even this “victory” may have been a chimera.
