During the 1980s, the French government quietly permitted immigrant men to bring multiple wives into the country, to the point where an estimated 200,000 families in Paris are now polygamous. Any suspicion that official concern over headscarves was motivated by an impulse toward gender equality is belied by the easy adoption of a permissive policy on polygamy, despite the burdens this practice imposes on women and the warnings issued by women from the relevant cultures.1 On this issue, no politically effective opposition galvanized. But once reporters finally got around to interviewing the wives, they discovered what the government could have...

Detainees Responsible for Terror Attacks Get Bare Minimum to Ensure They Stay Alive - Nov. 24, 2005 — A can of Ensure is the highlight of Thanksgiving for the dozen or so top al Qaeda terrorists in the CIA's secret overseas prisons. Besides the repetitive playing of rap music, they have been made to talk by harsh treatment that includes water boarding, in which water is poured over the face to make them think they are drowning. "The person believes they are being killed, and as such it really amounts to a mock execution," said John Sifton, the Afghanistan researcher...

Orange County School Superintendent Ron Blocker announced Wednesday that the school district is running out of gas, according to a Local 6 News report. The pipelines out of New Orleans that supply the district with diesel fuel have no power and the suppliers have canceled the shipments. So, the school district estimates it has enough gas to bus students to and from school through Friday, Local 6 News reported. If another shipment of fuel does not come before Friday buses will not be able to run. "Parents, as early as next week, will have to drive their children to school,"...

Student Banned from Decrying Animal Cruelty in Public AreaORLANDO, Fla., June 15, 2005—Florida’s Seminole Community College (SCC) has forbidden student Eliana Campos to distribute literature protesting slaughterhouse brutality at a table in the public area of the campus’s café. An administrator at the Oviedo campus refused to honor Campos’ constitutional rights because the source of the literature (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA) “instill[ed] a feeling” in her that she did not like. SCC’s decision comes despite allowing other groups to set up tables exactly where Campos wanted to do so. When Campos protested this differential treatment,...

As virus writers release multiple variants of Mytob in a bid to create a super worm, experts say vigilant security measures should block any master menace. The creators of Mytob tweak the code within the worm in a similar way to developers trying to perfect new software, and have released hundreds of variants of the mass-mailing worm. "We have not seen this before. Virus writers are hammering out variants every day, testing the virus, tweaking it and seeing how many people are hit and which elements of the malicious code are the most successful," said Carole Theriault, security consultant for...

Feeling sad and having just heard the news that President Ronald Reagan had just passed this past Saturday June 5, 2004 at 5:00 PM I switched my car radio from my local news radio to my local NPR, PRI affiliate to get my fill of the left by listening to A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor. I can normally make it through the live shows but this last show I had to turn off. The show began with ridicule and cheers from the audience when the Host (Mr. Garrison Keillor) announced that the former President had past away within...
