July 28, 2003 -- After the shooting at city hall on Wednesday, banning citizens with guns from public areas seems more necessary than ever. Yet, many other city halls across the country take a radically different approach. In two neighboring states, Pennsylvania and Vermont, as well as states across the nation from Virginia to Washington, concealed handgun permit holders are allowed to take their guns with them when they attend city council meetings. Gun-free zones may appear like the obvious solution to New Yorkers, but consider an analogy: Suppose a criminal is stalking you or your family. Would you feel safe putting a sign in front of your home saying, "This Home Is a Gun-Free Zone"? Law-abiding citizens might be pleased by such a sign, but to criminals it is an invitation.

The Liberals' gun registry program was pointed at Kim Campbell, not crime. That's why it shot itself in the foot, says former justice adviser JOHN DIXON By JOHN DIXON Wednesday, January 8, 2003 – Print Edition, Page A11 We now know that the government's gun-control policy is a fiscal and administrative debacle. Its costs rival those of core services like national defence. And it doesn't work. What is less well known is that the policy wasn't designed to control guns. It was designed to control Kim Campbell. When Ms. Campbell was enjoying a brief season of success in her re-election...

WASHINGTON -- The Department of Health and Human Services' inspector general is facing scrutiny for allegedly politicizing her nonpartisan office, forcing out longtime career civil servants and mishandling a government-issue gun.

Complaints about the performance of Inspector General Janet Rehnquist, daughter of Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist, have attracted attention from other inspectors general and from Iowa Republican Sen. Charles Grassley, soon to be the powerful Finance Committee's chairman.

Fed up and frustrated by the alarming number of armed robberies in the city, Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright is urging law-abiding people to fight firepower with firepower.

But the proposal has generated little public support, and at least one expert said the suggestion borders on irresponsibility.

Cross Roads may land in court over development dispute 05/20/2002 By Tom Reedy / Staff Writer< CROSS ROADS — A dispute over a high-density subdivision near Cross Roads caused an upheaval during the last city election and now threatens to spill over into court. Carol Roberts, a certified public accountant who served on a City Council committee to investigate the development, says she and Randy Wallace, a member of the city’s Comprehensive Planning Committee, have been singled out for harassment from the developer, Bob Shelton Enterprises of Denton.
WASHINGTON — Democratic governors from the South aligned themselves Monday with Georgia Sen. Zell Miller's call for Democrats to be more sympathetic and supportive of people who own guns.

In recent months, Democratic Party leaders have struggled to overcome what they contend is a negative stereotype, created by the GOP, that paints all Democrats as gun-control extremists. Having worked with many Democrats over the years, we can say for the record that not all members of the party are extremists on the gun issue - just their leaders. So long as the party elevates the likes of Charles Schumer, Dianne Feinstein, Ted Kennedy, Dick Gephardt, Joe Biden, John Conyers, Tom Daschle, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Al Gore and Patty Murray to positions of leadership, the firearms community will take...

I just heard this on WBAP in Dallas, at about 10:45 AM; Mark Davis was having a candidates' forum with mayoral candidate and city councilwoman Laura Miller and two others. A caller asked about gunshows on city property, and Laura was vehemently opposed to gunshows in the convention center or on any other city property. She even went so far as to say she thought there are "two many guns." !!After she left, Mark Davis remarked he thought that comment would ruin her in this election - and I hope so!

The horrific events of the past few months and the manner in which Americans have responded have been a testament to the resolve of the American people. We have prevailed relying on the ideals and values that our forefathers founded this nation upon. Yet, in this time of national unity, there are those who wish to circumvent the Constitution and oppress the freedom afforded the law-abiding citizens of this nation. If Sept. 11 has taught us anything, it is that we need to safeguard our rights, not relinquish them. Attorney General John Ashcroft inherited a U.S. Justice Department riddled with ...

Turning a buck on patriotism 10/07/2001By Donna Fielder"I feel like I’ve been promoted to bus driver," the firefighter told me. "You know, bus drivers eat free when they bring in a bus load to some restaurants." I guess the flag-waving had to slow down sometime, and it was inevitable that some people would start to think about turning a buck on patriotism. After Sept. 11, everyone wanted to wave a flag, and flags became scarce. I saw them offered on the Internet at five times the price they usually cost. It’s called capitalism, I guess. I understand making a profit. ...

Late last week, Liddy Dole not only canceled her Kansas voter registration - but registered to vote in Rowan County, North Carolina. What you consider "your permanent residence" determines whether or not you can register to vote in a North Carolina county, according to Rena Johnson, director of the Alamance County Board Of Elections. According to North Carolina General Statute 163-57, as amended late in July this year, Liddy Dole's claim to any right to register to vote in Rowan County is rather dubious - unless she never voted in another state or in Washington during the over-40 years she ...

Three theories of modern business have crippled Detroit: Business schools taught that a manager didn't have to know a business to run it; all a manager needed was an MBA. The marketing and advertising companies that pushed the theory of Brand Marketing--that advertising myth-making was more important than the qualities of the product itself. This works for the Marlborough Man, but it doesn't sell Chevrolets. Wall Street's theory of Stockholder Value, which has companies spending money to buy back their shares--the theory being that this would push up the stock price. So instead of using its cash to build better ...

Freep this toll-free number 800-579-8871 established by Fla. Dems to "report irregularities". It's awfully busy, but if you get someone on the line, ask them how to file a report, will it be acted on soon, who to mail a report to. For a final question, you can always ask "If I keep you on the line, does that mean that you can't talk to some other cretin who thinks he voted wrong?" This will usually produce a loud "CLICK".

WASHINGTON - Housing Secretary Andrew Cuomo and some mayors suing U.S. gun makers are expressing outrage at industry ads that they view as a "sleazy" attack on their patriotism. At a news conference Tuesday, they demanded equal time to rebut the gun industry ads, aired nationally during the Republican and Democratic conventions. The two ads funded by the Hunting & Shooting Sports Heritage Fund depict the American flag being ripped apart, star by star and stripe by stripe, as a narrator criticizes the Clinton administration and big-city mayors for lawsuits against firearms manufacturers. The 60-second spots link gun makers ...

Do Women Love George W. Bush? Current wisdom among the pundits has it that women find George W. Bush more appealing than men do. Some polls back that up, at least modestly. And some of those pundits -- the guys, mostly -- suggest that's because of what they view as Bush's boyish charm, in contrast to Al Gore's perceived charisma deficit. We know that issues are what really count with you. After all, the Women.com/Good Housekeeping Majority 2000 survey showed that women vote with their heads, not their hearts. But since the personal is increasingly political these days, we'd ...
