I encountered the California Highway Patrol while carrying concealed and wanted to share the experience. I was returning from Sacramento to my home near Angels Camp, in the Motherlode region of the state, when I crested a rise in the road . My radar detector, I have one for entertainment not circumvention of the law, went off and I saw a CHP on the shoulder to my right, a CHP approaching in the opposite lane, and behind the...

Has anyone else felt a chill run down thier spine as the name of their old unit been mentioned going into action? I did as the 5th Marine Regiment was mentioned as being two miles inside of Iraq. Viet Nam, 12/67 - 1/69, Kilo Co., 3rd. Batt., 5th Marines. This helps relieve the hollow feeling I experienced after Sept. 11 knowing I was too old to reenlist.

A Modesto sports memorabilia store owner shot and killed a gunman trying to rob the shop Monday afternoon, police said. Detectives questioned and later released Dave Prendergast, 57, after the shooting, which happened at Dr. Sports Cards & Collectibles at 415 Burney St. Evidence was inconclusive in determining whether detectives would recommend criminal charges be filed against Prendergast, Detective Phil Owen said. The robber, who was shot once in the head, had not been identified late Monday, police spokesman Doug Ridenour said. At 1:15 p.m., several witnesses heard two gunshots come from inside the downtown Modesto business. Moments later, a...
