Dear Friends, This week, I was just as outraged as I am sure many of you were, when I learned that millions of dollars were paid out in bonuses to employees at companies that received bailout funding. I am dumbfounded to think that some of the very people at AIG whose recklessness caused such harm to the financial system and our economy are now being rewarded. What’s more is that the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department knew about these bonuses before they went out and did not aggressively act to stop them. The Treasury needs to step up oversight...

Dear Rob: Thank you for contacting me. I am always glad to hear from you. At a time when Americans are working harder to make ends meet, I share your concern about the high cost of gasoline. Iowans are paying record prices and it's creating a ripple effect throughout our economy and the problem only seems to be getting worse. These prices make living our daily lives a real challenge. I am fully committed to changing the course of America's energy policy - to transition America away from our crippling dependence on foreign sources of oil. These debilitating prices are...

Why Terrorism Works By Irwin N. Graulich Sep 4, 2003 Stop thinking like a Westerner and you will begin to understand terrorism. There was virtually no guilt trip for destroying the great cities of Nazi Germany, Japan or Korea, including the unfortunate victims of war known as "innocent civilians." Once upon a time democracies knew their enemies and were able to determine general target locations. There was no moral problem with bombing Berlin, Dresden, Hiroshima or Nagasaki, although they resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties. Yet today, when 5 civilian deaths are produced in Iraq or 2 Palestinians are...

On the Axel of Evil, the boredom of the Winter Olympics, and Amazon women By Jackson Murphy web posted February 18, 2002 I was at the barbershop getting my hair cut last week and the topic du jour, the barber philosophy if you will, was the Winter Olympics. That is not entirely true, the girl cutting my hair thought most people wanted to talk about the poor haircuts her colleague Lynne was giving. Lynne for her part was showing off her brand new belly button ring-which is probably why the old guys didn't mind coming back to see her after ...

Scientists have presented new ideas for the future exploration of planets that circle far-away stars. Prof Sarah Thompson Unlike today's relatively small space vehicles such as the shuttle, the cosmic craft of tomorrow will have to be the size of small cities and be constructed in orbit. Researchers gave their suggestions on how we might explore other star systems to the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Boston. They said the 200 or so volunteers who went on a mission would have to realise that they were taking up a one-way ticket and would ...

A team of Belgian researchers came to that conclusion after using climate models to simulate a 1 percent increase in the primary greenhouse gas each year, a rise they said coincides with current trends.

While slight, the shift in the planet's spin could be measured over the course of decades, providing an ideal method to check the effects of civilization-induced warming of the world, the scientists said.

Amidst several decades of media flurry and hype several critical factors about the 'greenhouse effect' and 'global warming' have been left out of the forecasts: 1) There was no C02 buildup in the 1990s. 2) According NASA satellite data and several Antarctic studies recently released, the Earth has been cooling for the last 18 years, the western ice sheet is growing, and the interior valleys have been getting colder for the last 30 years. Scientists who support the global warming theory have been surprised and embarrassed by the results of a number of long term studies. Remember the greenhouse effect? ...

ANYONE WHO DOUBTS this last proposition should examine the farm-subsidy programs, which are the classic example of how unnecessary spending survives. It is a parable for our larger budget predicament. Every year the government sends out checks to about 700,000 to 900,000 farmers. Since 1978, federal outlays to support farmers’ incomes have exceeded $300 billion. How large is that? Well, the publicly held federal debt (the result of past budget deficits) is about $3.3 trillion. The past two decades of farm subsidies equals almost 10 percent of the debt. But wait: Congress is about to expand the subsidies. The Congressional ...
