MOBILE, Alabama — A Mobile County judge this morning denied bail for a teenager accused of killing Wendy Fisher on the street outside her home on Racine Avenue in west Mobile. That means that Trayon Washington, 17, will be jailed pending trial on a murder charge. For now, Washington is charged with murder, but Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich said it could be upgraded to capital murder depending on the circumstances. “The investigation is continuing,” she said. Under state law, murder can be a capital offense if it occurs in or from a vehicle. Witnesses have said one of...

A millionaire businessman singlehandly fought off three armed burglars after they put a knife to his teenage daughter's throat, he told a court. Bernard Dwyer, 51, who runs a construction business, said he believed they would all be killed and decided he "would rather die like a man than a dog" defending his family. Despite being temporarily knocked unconscious and then stabbed three times in the head, he said he became "invigorated" by the sight of the attackers threatening his 13-year-old daughter Aisling. advertisement In a rage he wrestled a gun from the arms of one attacker and then beat...

While the IDF needs until the end of the week to deal Hizbullah a fatal blow, the military is prepared to remain in southern Lebanon for as long as it takes, even several months, until a multinational force takes control of the territory, IDF Deputy Chief of Staff Maj.-Gen. Moshe Kaplinsky told The Jerusalem Post Tuesday. "The IDF knows how to operate for as long as it takes even if it means remaining in the territory for a long time," Kaplinsky told the Post during a visit to a military base along the northern border. The general said the IDF...

ALTHOUGH George Bush has reopened a slight lead over John Kerry, the outcome of next week's US presidential election is far from certain. What would Kerry's election as president mean? A dangerous time for the West. Many have correctly pointed out that Kerry is, for now, proposing an Iraq policy not very different from that of President Bush. Yet there are vital issues other than Iraq. Kerry's 34-year record in public life indicates that he never understood what the Cold War was about and that he does not understand the nature of the US's rogue-state or Islamist terrorist enemies now....

The challenger has made much of his assertion that Bush has squandered world sympathy in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in 2001, writes Tony Parkinson. President George Bush speaks to the American people in a folksy idiom. Self-evidently, this approach does not travel well. He also leads the superpower when it is engaged in a gruelling and harrowing campaign to confront the phenomenon of jihadist terrorism, one element of which involved a costly and contentious war in Iraq. Bush calls this the "hard work of history" - but, clearly, this agenda has tested the limits of international goodwill. According...
