And why not? They are barely paid to stay and have to put up with more bull than you can possibly imagine...from the kids (who are way out there these days) from the admin (who are uptight as ever) and from parents (who are...well... parents...enough said there)

WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO WORK IN THIS PROFESSION AND GET PAID BARELY ENOUGH TO LIVE ON WITH OUT A SECOND OR THIRD JOB!?

So guess what...school districts are hiring anyone who will do the job... sigh...what do people expect?

HEY PEOPLE!!! Plan on MORE of the same kind of teachers every year! Good teachers are dropping like flies and finding other professions! WHY?

BECAUSE WE DON'T PAY THEM!

Do you really want $30,000/year people teaching your kids? That's what many teachers make year!

Yep... I feel much the same of all you wrote. Unfortunately I teach high school in a low socio economic area to kids with (don't look too surprised) behavior disorders.

I am the parent of awesome kids who grew up with a sound faith filled home but I see a lot of parents not home mentally...and physically. While that has been a problem for generations in our society...there was at least a basic moral that emanated through our culture...now that is going too and too many of us are letting the evil permeate in.

In my classroom when we say the pledge and then there is a "moment of silence' (instead of prayer-dont get me started on that one!) I tell my students I am praying for them. Of course they roll their eyes...but sometimes they smile. Its worth the chance I figure.

But I still compete daily with "slipknot" and "Resident Evil" "Hellboy" and the like...sigh! arrrgh!

Have you considered there are a lot of 'good' parents who are working two jobs and are just trying to hold on to their own lives? And their kids are 'out there' with other kids watching videos, watching MTV, playing doom and Grand Theft Auto (now in its third version)

Media! Geeez why hasn't anyone here looked at what MTV Movies and Music do to all of our kids? Think of the awful tv ads for satonic and mass murdering movies!! Kids are watching these videos over and over. The top song/ music video right now is Slipknot "Duality". Go watch that video! It's theme is hopelessness and doom. IT'S BEEN THE TOP SONG FOR WEEKS!

I am quite frankly surprized more kids aren't blowing things up!

We (as kids growing up and parents now) didn't have the TREMENDOUS exposure to all this! Let's face it many people in our society do not have the financial or mental resourses to have hours of loving bonding time with their children ... so they rely on media.

We are screwed and it's getting worse!

Absolutely positively put this guy to work!! NOW! Special Ed is a wonderful idea!

Until there is a reasonable way to get rid of the incompetent judges or teachers, there really is no way for us to trust any of them.

The driving motivator for most teachers is altruism. That's the Catch-22. Government knows this and exploits it. Then they try to fix the problem with education with sweeping mandates! There are a LOT of screwed up people out there raising a LOT of screwed up kids and we as a society are putting low paid personnel in classrooms and telling them to fix our kids! You bet teachers need to be creative! Competing with Eminem, Gansta movies, Soprano TV, free drugs and nobody home...Joe Pesci in yo' face...is a fine trick to come out of a 'cool' teachers big, bag of tricks! There are some amazing, creative teachers out there making a difference with thousands of Johnny's and Lonnies who arrive at school (sporadically) with a LOT of baggage!

The author is right on target. But I add..PAY teachers more...you'll get better teachers. (Amazing concept that seems to work for basketball/baseball/etc players) Otherwise get out of the teachers way, he/she has little time to fuss with all this constant beaucracy! They need to attend to page 127... it's Johnny's turn to read aloud.
