**WARNING: GRAPHICS INTENSIVE THREAD** You love them, you hate them, you love to hate them. Hollyweirdos, those wacky leftists who gather together for the annual group hug known as the Oscars. And how fun it is to heckle and razz them as they parade down the red carpet posing for the cameras, granting vapid interviews to equally vapid interviewers, too serious about making their political statements and social commentaries to realize the joke's on them. No one watches their movies. Just look at box office receipts. The money makers are the family films - the ones take it easy on...

Baltimore's NEWS - TALK- SPORTS Station Grieve In Private, Not Along Maryland's HighwaysFriday, October 24, 2003 WBAL Radio as Reported by Angela Jackson Calling them inappropriate and distracting, two local organizations are expressing concern over the number of public memorials popping up along Maryland's highways. Anna Ravegum with Americans United for Separation of Church and State says grieving should be done in private, not along government property. "It's a complicated thing where you have somebody's private grief being expressed on public land, whether it's a cross or just a simple wreath, it's really something that needs public...

In city, some get to vote at age 16 Situation caused by gap between Sept. primary and Nov. '04 election By Doug Donovan Sun Staff May 9, 2003 Many of Baltimore's 16-year-olds will be eligible to vote in September's primary - an anomaly in election history, officials say. The unusually long, 14-month gap between the Sept. 9 primary and next year's general election created this oddity, which city and state officials had not anticipated when they recently failed to negotiate a new primary date. Under election laws, residents are eligible to vote in this September's primary as long as they...

Dr. Atkins Hospitalized With Severe Brain Injury NEW YORK (AP) - Low-carbohydrate diet promoter Dr. Robert Atkins was hospitalized Wednesday with severe head injuries after falling on an icy sidewalk, his spokesman said. Atkins, 72, slipped and fell during Tuesday's snowstorm outside the Atkins Center for Complementary Medicine, spokesman Richard Rothstein said. ``He was negotiating the snow and ice and failed in that negotiation,'' Rothstein said. A colleague rushed Atkins to New York Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he underwent surgery for severe head trauma, Rothstein said. The extent of Atkins' impairment was unknown, he said. ``He's in recovery now,...

The following is being circulated by a colleague on behalf of his son, a freshman at a local public high school, as part of a project for his government class. It is revealing on many levels as to the quality and slant of the instruction he is receiving. Comments and evisceration* welcomed. 1st Amendment Survey 1) Can state mandated laws requiring any type of religious practice violate the terms of the 1st Amendment and undermine America’s foundation of having no established religion? (yes) (no) 2) Could having regulated/optional prayer in schools have a negative outcome on student performance? (yes) (no)...

During the debate at Morgan State, KKT scolded her Republican opponent for wanting to reach out to African Americans by saying: "This is not Star Trek. African Americans are not aliens."

Ron Smith just scored a football! HRH Kathleen Kennedy Townsend sat for an hour+ interview on WBAL radio with Ron Smith and various Maryland callers. There were many excellent questions raised and some absolutely astounding answers- including a few classic KKT statements. There was even some empty "air" time as Ron Smith sat, I am sure, dumbfounded at some of her responses and times when she was completely stumped. What follows is a rough outline of the questions and the answers paraphrased from my notes. My thanks to the excellent callers and emailers that had that woman squirming in her...

Baltimore's NEWS - TALK- SPORTS Station It Was Ugly at Morgan State Last NightSeptember 27, 2002 Ron Smith's Something to Say (September 27, 2002) Well, what a rude, contemptuous, ugly reception Bob Ehrlich got at Morgan State last night when he showed up to debate Kathleen Kennedy Townsend. (They even booed his wife and parents as they were led to their seats). This gubernatorial debate was so stacked in favor of the Democrat as to be ludicrous—even for the State of Maryland. Not only was the audience aggressively hostile to the Republican congressman, the questioners on the...

Kathleen Kennedy Townsend came to prove that she has command of both the minutiae of policy and the basics of the English language. Robert L. Ehrlich sought to emerge as Daniel venturing into the lion's den - a Republican at a historically black campus at a forum sponsored by the Baltimore chapter of the NAACP. At the outset of last night's forum for the two major candidates for governor of Maryland, however, the question, at least briefly, was this: Would Ehrlich get a word out?

It seemed fitting that NAACP President Kweisi Mfume adopted a boxing promoter's cadence in introducing last night's gubernatorial debate at Morgan State University. "Ladies and gentlemen," Mfume began before the television cameras started rolling. "You know, in Las Vegas they say, 'Go to your respective corners.' But we're not going to do that." But he might as well have. This was the election-time equivalent of pro wrestling's Smackdown. It was held in a cavernous college auditorium in which the crowd became part of the story by behaving as if it were watching a TV game show.

In a 90-minute face-off marked by verbal cuts and sarcasm, Democrat Kathleen Kennedy Townsend and Republican Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. sharply attacked each other's records and political promises last night as they debated for the first time in Maryland's gubernatorial campaign. Neither candidate broke new ground in the ragged debate, repeating themes they've emphasized through the campaign. Townsend argued that Ehrlich's congressional record shows he has turned his back on schoolchildren, minorities and the poor. Ehrlich said Townsend lacks the experience to lead the state and almost four decades of Democratic rule has led to arrogance and budget shortfalls.

How to give your cat a pill 1. Pick cat up and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Well, the great thing about Washington Post articles is that you don't have to fuss with all the formatting. KKT is making one of her KKTisms a 'central theme' of her campaign. Gotta check this one out.

Student: Many mourning his death struggle to reconcile the talented athlete they knew with the youth who robbed a liquor store. What better place to begin an effort to collect anecdotes about remarkable accomplishments by teens than with the astute minds at Free Republic. It has long been a pet peeve of mine that our culture insists that the innocence of childhood (and with it the absolution of any consequences resulting from poor decisions) be extended throughout the teenage years and into the early twenties while at the same time allowing them to participate in society as "adults"- namely driving, joining the Taliban, dictating to parents, sexuality, etc. To my mind, we can't have it both ways. 'Kids these days' want ...

Last night, as a result of an email campaign, thousands of Americans turned out with candles to offer their prayers and support in this current crisis. In the same spirit, let us begin writing uplifting notes of resolve, solidarity, and patriotism on the outside of all envelopes sent via snail mail for the duration of the war. Statements such as "God Bless America", "God Bless the USA", "Proud to Be American", and "Support Our Troops" are examples of such messages. The current wave of patriotism must not be allowed to fade away as Americans move through the natural grieving process ...
