So, the U.S. never really deserved to be considered a beacon of freedom? I guess the millions who left their families and everything familiar to start a new life ventured here under false pretenses. What dupes!

Don't forget about Laurie Myroie's book linking Saddam and Iraqi intelligence to the first attack on the WTC in '93 (an event whose significance was so vastly underappreciated).
The question remains, why didn't the Bush administration cite these two incidents in its arguments leading up to the invasion of Iraq? Undermining confidence in the executive branch is no good reason, especially if that confidence is keeping us blind to real threats (which it most obviously did, if anything was learned from the WTC bombing in '93).
Patriot CJC, will you be so concerned about damaging the executive's ability to function when we end up with another president like Clinton, perhaps one willing to hand over U.S. sovereignty to the likes of the UN?
  • White House Slams Senate Dems on Gas Prices, Nominations

Once again the White House misses an opportunity to score some points. McClellan's comments regarding the actions of the Senate Dems- " stop holding up action", "unfortunate", "not adhering to constitutional responsibility"- while accurate, are much too weak. The same can be said of previous comments made by Rep. senators.
McClellan, and other Republicans, should take a much more forceful approach with comments centered on how the will of the MAJORITY OF AMERICANS, as reflected in the House, Senate, AND the White House is being ignored and actively resisted by these Senate Dems. Their loyalty to party outweighs the oath everyone one of them took to uphold the Constitution. The fact that they are clearly standing in the way of the will of the MAJORITY OF AMERICANS should be stressed repeatedly by Republicans. Senate Dems' actions are UNCONSTITUTIONAL, UNDEMOCRATIC, AND UN-AMERICAN. In America, the WILL OF THE MAJORITY prevails, so long as its not trampling on the rights of the minority, which is not the case here. That should be the tone of the comments being made. Republican leaders just don't know how to play the game. Heck, this isn't even playing the game, its just the truth.

"Highlight the Dem's own words, and use those words against them." -freep_toad
That is exactly what the White House and Senate Republicans should be doing- constantly reminding Americans of this. But they won't because they have no backbone. They are so afraid of being perceived as mean-spirited and divisive. Its maddening! When will they finally learn, as a party, not to be afraid to stand for the courage of their convictions?

Just goes to show you where the intelligence can be found on the political spectrum. Moving more to the Left we find less and less of a capacity for intelligence.

I'm not familiar with either case, but I will state that I'm a firm believer in federalism. It is not Ashcroft's responsibility to meddle in the affairs of individual states.

This article is apparently written from the viewpoint of an impartial observer who is simply enjoying the democratic process at work. Yet, no where in his references to the various mayors forcing the issue does he accurately report that they are breaking the law, undermining the rule of law in the process. I wonder if the writer would take such an impartial stance if a mayor took identical actions regarding the 2nd Amendment? The writer also brings up the question of how much federal authority is appropriate. Funny how we read nothing of the sort from writers like this "mainstream" writer, concerning the numerous other ways our national government exercises its massive authority, except from known conservative writers who we have to seek out. Bias? Yeah, right, there's no media bias.

If there is still anyone out there with ambivalence on the decision to invade Iraq, or if you simply want further confirmation on the threat the Saddam regime surely posed, please read Laurie Mylroie's "War Against America". It clarified my thoughts.
