American Anglican Council'sA Place to Stand General Convention 2003 8/06/03 Statement from Archbishop Akinola on the Election of Gene Robinson "The confirmation of Gene Robinson's election by the House of Bishops (ECUSA), as the first actively gay bishop has brought much sadness and disappointment to us in the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion). We are astonished that such a high level convention of ECUSA should conspire to turn their back on the clear teaching of the Bible on the matter of human sexuality. Even more shocking is the violation of their own constitution in which they claim to...

Bishop Grew's Statement on the Rev. V. Gene Robinson's ConfirmationTo the Diocese of Ohio:Yesterday, the Rev. Canon Gene Robinson was confirmed as the bishop-coadjutor of the Diocese of New Hampshire. I supported that confirmation. For many, this affirmation of Canon Robinson’s election is a sign of God’s in-breaking kingdom, a kingdom that includes all people in the far-reaching embrace of divine hospitality and love. For others, the decision is a painful and difficult reality that leads them to ask whether or not there is still a place for them in the Episcopal Church. In addition, this action will have consequences, not just...

Nick Shultz and John Miller are quite right to say that the Davis recall is not grounded on any particularly conservative principle. Quite the opposite: The recall, and the California initiative process generally, are outgrowths of the Progressive Era in California, and are intended to make government more "populist" or "democratic." The irony of course is that the initiative proces has mostly served conservative policy goals over the last generation in California, starting with Prop 13 and running through Prop 209 (ending racial preferences), term limits (though this is a dubious idea at best), a state version of the Defense...

Ohio's two highest-ranking black elected Republicans said yesterday they were personally offended by Mississippi Sen. Trent Lott's racial comments, and one of them called on him to resign as Senate Republican leader. "I think if he truly loves the party, he would step down,'' Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell said. Blackwell said he had "conveyed my disappointment in both Senator Lott's comments and his leadership'' to Ohio's senators as well as other national political leaders in Washington. Ohio Sens. Mike DeWine and George V. Voinovich, both Republicans, have condemned Lott's comments, but neither has called for his resignation. Lott's...

Tuesday's elections hurt some prospects for the presidential caucuses, leaders say. By THOMAS BEAUMONTRegister Staff Writer11/10/2002 Influential Iowa Democrats say the presidential hopes of vanquished U.S. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle and outgoing House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt suffered significant damage Tuesday in their party's poor showing in the midterm elections.Daschle's failure to hold on to a thin Senate majority and Gephardt's loss of seats in the House mark the nation's rejection of their leadership and the need for new leadership, they say."I think that both Tom Daschle and especially Dick Gephardt are tremendously hurt by the election results," said...

September 11: What Our Children Need to KnowSeptember 2002 ***This is a partial HTML rendering of a PDF report that is available in full at http://www.edexcellence.net/Sept11/September11.pdf . Introduction For many years to come, Americans will debate the causes and implications of the attacks on New York City and Washington on September 11, 2001, as well as the aborted attack that led to the Pennsylvania crash of United Airlines flight 93. These comprised far too traumatic an event to set aside immediately after it happened, like the latest automobile pile-up on the Interstate. We will chew on it, agonize about it,...

The Atlantic Monthly | September 2002 Homeland Insecurity A top expert says America's approach to protecting itself will only make matters worse. Forget "foolproof" technology; we need systems designed to fail smartly by Charles C. Mann ..... To stop the rampant theft of expensive cars, manufacturers in the 1990s began to make ignitions very difficult to hot-wire. This reduced the likelihood that cars would be stolen from parking lots; but apparently contributed to the sudden appearance of a new and more dangerous crime, carjacking. After a vote against management Vivendi Universal announced earlier this year that its...

Sports Ohio becoming bastion of bottle-throwing buffoons Wednesday, December 19, 2001 Bob Hunter Dispatch Sports Columnist Three years ago, Miller introduced those revolutionary plastic beer bottles during the Super Bowl. The company was so proud of them that it delivered two plastic bottles of beer to the hotel rooms of all members of the media, along with a news release explaining what a good idea it was. It sure seemed like a good idea to me -- two free beers in milk cartons would have been OK, too -- but the ramifications of it never occurred to me. It ...

The pilot of the Navy reconnaissance plane downed after a collision with a Chinese jet fighter on Sunday was ordered to land on the Chinese Island of Hainan by the Navy's Pacific Command, according to military expert Col. David Hackworth. "The pilot of that aircraft would have, by the time he landed at that base, been talking to the four star admiral, (Dennis C.) Blair, the commander of the U.S. forces in the Pacific," Hackworth told WABC Radio's Sean Hannity late Tuesday. "He got his instructions from the top guy." Hackworth said sources inside the military have told him the ...
