On Arthur McGowan's thread protesting posters using long lists of people to bump, something happened at FreeRepublic. We are a very diverse group of people with strong ideas about many different issues, and sometimes these strong opinions create an atmosphere of dissension among us. Thank you, Arthur McGowan, for letting us see the powerful force FreeRepublic has become. When Arthur first posted his thread he probably had no intention other than what he stated: "Stop the Posting to Lists of People", but Freepers from all over the world jumped on this thread. In his comments he used the words, "It's ...

California's Davis Targets Texas Firms Fort Worth: Texas is emerging as the alleged villain in the West Coast energy crisis as California Gov. Gray Davis engages in daily verbal attacks on Texas-based companies that he claims are gouging consumers in his state. Consider the latest remarks from Davis, part of a national radio address he delivered Saturday: "Out-of-control energy prices already have bankrupted our largest utility, put the state's solvency at risk, and have started to seriously affect our economy...Now, make no mistake: I'm a pro-business Democrat. But what's going on here, pure and simple, is unconscionable price-gouging by the ...

Somehow, a place for CONSERVATIVE issues seems overtaken by a brand of people who believe themselves to be conservative when their moral/political philoshopy seems more a cross between anarchy and unabashed hedonism. I'm speaking, of course, of Libertarians. Thread after thread after tireless thread they demand full access to all the world's demons while paying as few taxes and taking as little responsibility for others as possible. The FR Libertarians (I don't know if they are representative of all Libertarians since this is my only exposure to them) can whine about the way government is run because they don't run ...

TRADITIONALLY, there has been one principle with which men have been able to judge lawmaking since the advent of liberalism (in the original sense of that word). It was, the principle enshrined in the American constitution and emulated, in part or in whole, by all nations seeking to follow America's revolutionary lead. It was the principle that guided men like William Graham Sumner, Stephen J. Field and Herbert Spencer in their respective intellectual arenas. It was a principle simultaneously legal, political and philosophic-the principle of liberty. Although still the best and only real guide to such subsidiary concepts as justice ...

"Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose,..." I suppose everyone remembers the words of that old song. At the time it was popular, I had no idea that in the year 2001 it would sum up my feelings for today's symbiosis between "freedom" and the degeneration of our culture. With the freedoms we have acquired in the last forty years it's wise to look at some of what accompanied those freedoms and liberties: Gay Pride Parades shown on television stations across the country The wholesale murder of our unborn by the most inhumane methods that can be imagined ...

I would like to express my thanks to all the Pre-Boomers (and some not so "Pre") who have participated in and contributed to the threads, "Calling All Pre-Boomers...Let's Reminisce". I started this topic at the suggestion of a dear FReeper lady, "nopardons", who intuitively knew that there were hundreds of older FReepers out there who needed to tell "what it used to be like" in America. I was hoping for maybe 20 replys; the threads extend to XII and include almost 2300 posts !! THANK YOU, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN !! TO ALL : We, Pre-Boomers, ...

Do you remember when you could ride around all night on fifty cents worth of gas? Do you remember when all the drive-in restaurants had carhops? And you had to park on one particular side or you just weren't "groovy". Remember when if the word "sh*t" happened to fall from your mouth in front of your mother, you got the old soap-bar-in-the-mouth-until-it-bubbles treatment? AND...if that word happened to be worse than "sh*t", the treatment to that offending mouth might well be a swat. Remember Dick and Jane and Spot? I loved those guys !! Speaking of guys, do you remember ...
