This is America and leftist filmmaker Robert Greenwald and his ilk have every right to wage a propaganda war to pressure the History Channel to kill their upcoming JFK miniseries. The miniseries’ script might not be done yet, but that’s how we roll in this country and until Senator Harry Reid steps in and threatens to put the History Channel out of business, like he did ABC in order to muscle a “Path to 9/11″ edit to his and the Clintons’ liking, Greenwald and Co. can all knock themselves out. And knocking themselves out they are: a website, petition, videos,...

GUATEMALA CITY -- President Bush promised today to launch a new push to overhaul of U.S. immigration laws and faced tough questions about deportation during a visit to Guatemala. Bush said he wanted to get a comprehensive immigration deal, similar to one that stalled last summer, through Congress before its summer recess. It would be the first time Bush has pushed such legislation since Democrats took control of both houses after November elections. "It seems like to me we've got to get this done by August," Bush said at a joint news conference with Guatemalan President Oscar Berger. But he...

The governor also made an appearance at one of Southern California's most iconic hot spots Muscle Beach in Venice. Angelides followed a more typical path for the holiday weekend, addressing labor rallies in Los Angeles, San Bernardino and San Diego...

A move by Democrats to allocate about $1 billion from two voter initiatives on the November ballot has upset Republicans, who say it reneges on the deal that led to a massive infrastructure package going before voters this fall. An Assembly committee on Wednesday is scheduled to consider legislation by Sen. Wesley Chesbro, D-Arcata, that would specify funding for parks if the bond measures are approved by voters. Republicans had rejected spending on parks this spring during negotiations over a public works package that asks voters to approve money for transportation, levee repair, schools and affordable housing. That package, worth...

Police in France said they had thwarted an attempt by a group of marijuana smokers to roll the world's longest joint by seizing a work-in-progress measuring 80 centimetres (32 inches) in length. "At some point, these young people had wanted to craft a joint of 1.12 metres to beat the world record in the discipline and get it officially registered," said a police officer in eastern France. "We don't know who had the idea. Sometimes ideas are created in an astonishing way," he said. During an investigation targeting a group of four smokers in the eastern Vosges area of France,...

HONOLULU (May 6) - Gas prices keep going up everywhere, and Hawaii's unique attempt to control them is running on fumes. The isolated island state whose drivers consistently pay the highest pump prices in the nation has given up on its government-regulated price controls after an eight-month experiment. With the average price for regular in Hawaii rising above $3.38 per gallon Friday, Gov. Linda Lingle signed into law a suspension of the cap that sought to keep the oil companies in check and give a fair price to customers. Bad timing with rising oil prices, outrage among island motorists, industry...

Nearly 1,500 Iraqi soldiers and police officers worked together to conduct the mission. The goal of Lion's Hunt is to introduce a strong Iraqi security force presence in the city's diverse communities and clean out pockets of terrorists hiding among law-abiding residents, U.S. officials said. The Iraqi-planned effort has been well received in the areas searched so far, Iraqi Maj. Gen. Wathiq, provincial director of police for Ninewah province, said. He...

SACRAMENTO (AP) - A Democratic lawmaker has introduced a bill to allow a divorcing spouse to keep financial records private, less than a month after a court struck down a similar law that opponents contend was passed to help a wealthy campaign donor. Earlier this month, Sen. Kevin Murray, D-Culver City, took over a Senate bill dealing with homeland security that was awaiting action in the Assembly and turned it into a measure dealing with financial records in divorce cases. It would require a court to seal certain financial records at the request of one of the spouses in a...

Japan's Hayabusa spacecraft is on track to attempt a sampling of asteroid Itokawa on November 19. In a rescheduled practice run on November 9, the craft has approached within 230 feet (70 meters) of the asteroid during a descent test that verified the probe's guidance and navigation functions. Engineers handling the Hayabusa spacecraft have clarified the issues that led to the cancellation of a November 4 landing rehearsal. An onboard navigation computer detected anomalous information during the practice run. The problem resulted in an abort command being transmitted to the probe by Earth controllers, thereby stopping the rehearsal. Subsequently, the...
