Relations between Israel and its staunchest ally, the US, have suffered a "tectonic rift", according to Israel's ambassador to Washington. Michael Oren briefed Israeli diplomats on the sharp deterioration between the countries ahead of Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu's visit to the White House early next month. According to those present, Oren said the situation had moved beyond a crisis that eventually passes. "There is no crisis in Israel-US relations because in a crisis there are ups and downs," he told the diplomats in Jerusalem. The latest WSJ/NBC News poll brought more bad news for President Obama and the Democrats. For the first time in his presidency, more Americans disapprove of Obama (48%) than approve of him (45%), according to the poll. Meanwhile, 62% say the U.S. is heading in the wrong direction, the highest level since before the 2008 elections, and just 40% give him positive ratings on his "ability to handle a crisis," down from 51% in January. Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer is fuming over a comment by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to an Ecuadorean television station that the government will file a lawsuit against Arizona's new immigration law. In a statement Thursday, Brewer said she learned of plans for the lawsuit from the June 8 interview Clinton gave to NTN24.
