The Obama Portraits: But Is It Art?

The official portrait is part of an old tradition perfected by Renaissance painters more than 500 years ago. The artists were generally painting powerful old men, who tended to be a bit ugly. To make up for what lacked in the sitter's physical beauty, the artist would emphasize the internal. A great painting of a king or pope tells you something about the subject's inner thoughts, his psyche. The image is more about what's going on inside his head rather than the outer trappings of his position or status. ... The Obama portraits are kind of shocking - not only...

Dallas News ^ | February 15, 2018 | by Rick Brettell, Art Critic
The U.S. was rather late in establishing a National Portrait Gallery - and in creating the conditions for commissioning official portraits of presidents and first ladies. There is little doubt that the Obamas were the most stylish and sophisticated first couple since the Kennedys and, as powerful individuals in their respective roles, the Obamas elected to each choose a different painter, thus breaking the tradition of commissioning official portraits from one - always white and always male - artist. But nothing is typical about the Obamas. They were the first African-American couple in the White House, and nothing is typical...

Sean Hannity and other right-wing conservatives are calling out President Barack Obama‘s presidential portrait, accusing the painting of having hidden perversion. In a blog post published on Tuesday and subsequently deleted, the Fox News anchor’s staff reports that “industry insiders” believe Kehinde Wiley secretly placed concealed images of sperm throughout his painting. “Controversy surrounding Kehinde Wiley’s wildly non-traditional portrait of the Commander-in-Chief broke out within minutes of its unveiling; with industry insiders claiming the artist secretly inserted his trademark technique -concealing images of sperm within his paintings,” the post reads. Hannity’s blog post also brings up comments Wiley made in...

The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery unveiled its commissioned portraits of former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama on Monday. Barack Obama image, painted by artist Kehinde Wiley, shows him seated in front of an ivy backdrop, while Michelle Obama was painted by Amy Sherald in a pale blue setting. Wiley and Sherald were the first black artists commissioned to paint a presidential couple for the Smithsonian. “Kehinde was working at a disadvantage,” the 44th U.S. president joked at the ceremony. “His subject was less becoming. Not as fly.” “I tried to negotiate less gray hair, but Kehinde’s artistic...

Barack and Michelle Obama re-emerged on the public stage Monday in Washington, only this time for an event that has nothing to do with politics. The former first couple's official portraits were unveiled at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery, a rite of passage for most former presidents, all of whom have their portraits hanging in the museum.

The Smithsonian Institute has just revealed an official portrait of former President Barack Obama in Washington, DC. Just before dramatically unveiling the former president's portrait, which depicts him sitting in a garden amid green ivy, the Institute presented a portrait of former first lady Michelle Obama, and it looks like it definitely left a huge impression on her. The portrait was greeted with gasps and applause. "Wow, wow," Obama said in awe once the portrait was unveiled. She gave a short speech afterward. "Can we just say wow again?" she said. "I have to tell you that as I stand...

WASHINGTON — The National Portrait Gallery will unveil official portraits of former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle on Monday — with the art world wondering how they will be portrayed by the noted African-American artists they selected to portray them. Obama, the nation’s first African-American president, selected Kehinde Wiley; Mrs. Obama picked Amy Sherald. Both artists are known for their painting of African-Americans. Wiley and Sherald are the first African-Americans to be commissioned by the gallery to paint official portraits. The gallery, part of the Smithsonian Institution, has the only complete collection of presidential portraits outside of the...

Thhe Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery have tapped contemporary artists to paint portraits of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle. The Obamas had a hand in the selection process, and, unfortunately, they have not selected famous artist George W. Bush to do the honors. But fortunately, they chose Kehinde Wiley, a wildly popular artist based in New York, and the lesser known, but still exciting up-and-coming Baltimore-based artist Amy Sherald. Wiley, who will paint the president, is known for depicting African American men in the style of the Old Masters over baroque backgrounds. In another lifetime known popularly...

Czech artist Ladislav Vlna has swapped his brush for a blowtorch as he ‘paints’ with fire to create artworks that change according to lighting. Vlna’s self-titled metallurgic painting technique results in surprisingly delicate and detailed pieces, mostly portraits or figures, with oxyacetylene torches. The 40-year-old artist begins by painting a draft upon a steel surface and then carves, sharpens and polishes the basic image into it before putting a flame to the engraving which alters its color, depending on the temperature. This process gives the piece its unique appearance.

King’s College London is to swap portraits of some of its founding fathers with a "wall of diversity" amid pressure from students, a dean says. The proposals were unveiled by Professor Patrick Leman, the Institute’s dean of education, who said that the faculty should not just be filled with “busts of 1920s bearded men” but rather more modern, diverse scholars so that the Institute feels less “alienating”. It comes two years after King’s sparked controversy for removing a photograph of Lord Carey, the former of Archbishop of Canterbury, in response to his opposition to gay marriage. Facing widespread criticism at...

When Republican congressman and Army veteran Brian Mast saw that a Florida VA hospital didn't have photographs of President Trump and Secretary of Veterans Affairs David Shulkin hanging in the lobby, he took action. Mast and a group of local veterans brought portraits of Trump and Shulkin to the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center and demanded they be installed, and the whole thing was caught on camera. They were successful, but within hours management at the hospital took down the pictures. Their reason? They could not authenticate the photos and they have to follow protocol. A VA spokeswoman said...

In military bases across the country, portraits of Obama are coming down and Trump memes are reportedly taking their place. Federal policy dictates that all Obama portraits in court houses, post offices, government buildings and military installations needed to be removed by 12:01 p.m. on Friday, January 20th. Trump portraits need to take their place, but not everyone has received their official portraits yet. These photos shared on social media purportedly show what's taken their place in the meantime.
