The preceeding "sketch" attributed to Erasmus provides a window into the RCC of Luther's day. Pretty funny too. Enjoy!

Very interesting screenplay! Thanks for the bump. You should ping the Romanists on the Neverending Story/Christian Chronicles thread (e.g. SoothingDave). They'll be sure to love it. ;) Grammarian

Where, would you say, can we find the window into the Protestants of Luther's day?
And what did Erasmus think of Pope Leo X?

Probably not on The Neverending Story thread. Erasmus' 16th century critique was from one who remained within the RCC. If you have a parallel internal critique of a contemporary Protestant, by all means post it.

Calvin, Wesley, Baker Eddy, Russell, (Smith?) - by your standards, anyone who came from or out of the 'Protestant' lineage but who isn't a "Lutheran" and found or was inspired to see a different, better or 'more correct' was to worship.
By the way, I liked the story.

The preceeding "sketch" attributed to Erasmus provides a window into the RCC of Luther's day. Pretty funny too. Enjoy! It says more about Julius than the Roman Catholic Church.

Reading Luther's own words,
"Let Your Sins Be Strong" would be a good place to start. Remember the old saying about giving people enough rope to hang themselves with.

Sorry. Just reread your post #6. Must have misread the part about critiquing while remaining within as opposed to leaving the church. Not the first time, won't be the last. That's why I'm...

Luther:
"If the mercy is true, you must therefore bear the true, not an imaginary sin. God does not save those who are only imaginary sinners. Be a sinner, and let your sins be strong, but let your trust in Christ be stronger, and rejoice in Christ who is the victor over sin, death, and the world." Luther was much more spiritually mature than the average professing Christian. He was giving counsel to a goody-two-shoes Pharisee/legalist who didn't think he was all that bad, and didn't reeeally think he had much of which to repent.
Luther (tongue-in-cheek) told him to go out and do something "reeeeeeeeally bad" so that he would have something to repent of.
