[Catholic Caucus] Pope Leo’s scandalous abortion remarks could help Democrats: here’s how

For decades faithful American clergy and lay groups have fought to ensure that abortion is considered a preeminent moral evil. Pope Leo's comments effectively undo all of that.

While a handful of Catholics on social media seem to be downplaying Pope Leo’s scandalous remarks about abortion and immigration, the sad reality is that his comments will actually have far-reaching consequences that will enable pro-abortion politicians in the U.S. continuing to promote their diabolical agenda.

For decades faithful clergy and Catholic lay groups have fought to ensure that abortion is considered a preeminent moral evil when it comes to politics and voting in America. Against them have stood dissident Catholic websites, bloggers, and Democratic lawmakers who seek to diminish its elevated status in order to justify supporting their left-wing ideology.

Leo’s comments effectively undo those years of hard work. In making them, he essentially justified Nancy Pelosi, Joe Biden, and others who have flouted the Church’s moral teaching for decades as his comments are almost word for word the arguments they have repeatedly used.

Leo’s remarks also serve to undermine the many courageous priests and bishops who for years warned these and other liberal Catholic lawmakers to amend their lives — and who barred them from Holy Communion for not doing so. But now they have just been given the moral cover needed to continue ahead, without pain of conscience, to keep voting for pro-abortion, pro-LGBT, and open borders legislation.

Democrats will use Leo’s words to justify their dissent

Next fall the U.S. Congress will hold its midterm elections. If you were a “pro-choice” Democrat facing off against a Republican who wants more stringent border controls, why wouldn’t you simply release an ad with footage of Leo stating that he supports your position on immigration? Doing that would completely undermine your opponent and paint him as not being genuinely pro-life.

What’s more, when the 2028 presidential race rolls around, Democrats will now be able to say, “Perhaps Pope Leo would agree with us in wanting to curb climate change, in having a more welcoming border policy, and in expanding a woman’s right to control her body.” It’s not difficult to imagine Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, who is rumored to be mulling a presidential bid, saying exactly this on a debate stage.

But why wait to capitalize on Leo’s remarks when that can be done now? Indeed, the political left has already started to use them to attack conservatives. Michael Steele, the GOP’s former National Committee Chairman, appeared on MSNBC last week to discuss Leo’s comments. Despite working for the Republican Party in years past, Steele has turned into an anti-Trump activist in recent years, using his platform to criticize conservatives so he can look like a moderate to liberals.

During his appearance, Steele praised Leo for his comments while arguing that they undermine Catholic Vice President JD Vance’s support for Trump’s deportation policies. And Steele is right to do this. Leo is indeed at odds with Vance on the subject. Make no mistake: the left will see to it that Leo’s remarks are not memory-holed when Vance seeks the presidency in 2028.

Real-world harm of Leo’s remarks

Michigan State Rep. Jim DeSana spoke about a brewing controversy at the Michigan Catholic Conference (MCC) last week. The MCC is the official policy arm of the Catholic Church in the state of Michigan. The controversy stems from the MCC’s decision to name two pro-abortion Democrats as “co-chairs” of its official legislative caucus. The other two chairs are Republican lawmakers.

DeSana expressed outrage over the decision. He said that it is scandalous to have two avowed abortion supporters as leaders of the caucus. And he’s entirely right. But now that Leo has made his remarks, DeSana’s criticisms have just been undermined completely.

Catholics must push back against Leo’s remarks, as they falsely equate the grave evil of abortion with issues that do not reach that level of moral significance. Catholics should also call on him to amend his remarks and state that he adheres to the Church’s long-standing teaching on the subject.

If Leo does not do this, liberals who support abortion will continue to cite his comments to justify their backing of laws that end the lives of pre-born children.

He’s another politician…not a man of God. He doesn’t have discernment to start with.

Just proves what a farce the whole Pope and “the church that Jesus instituted” argument.
You cannot abide evil. Ever.

"In January 1973, the Supreme Court of the United States gave our nation Roe v. Wade and its companion decision Doe v. Bolton, and in so doing effectively removed every legal protection from human beings prior to birth. The legacy of Roe is virtually incalculable. In its wake it has left death and sorrow and turmoil.

Millions of lives have been destroyed before birth and even during the very process of being born. Countless women have been traumatized so deeply by abortion that they spend years struggling to find peace, healing, and reconciliation. Men grieve because they could not "choose" to protect a child they helped bring into existence, and society has increasingly coarsened by toleration and acceptance of acts that purposely destroy human life."

Link to quote above usccb.org

“Someone who says I’m against abortion but is in favor of the death penalty is not really pro-life,” he said on Tuesday. “Someone who says I’m against abortion but I’m in agreement with the inhuman treatment of immigrants in the United States, I don’t know if that’s pro-life.”
The infallible Catholic pope

Maybe Leo and the Catholic bishops don't get along or maybe we're just not supposed to notice which side of the bread is being buttered.

Instead of telling me to be outraged.

Instead of telling me he said something scandalous.

Please tell me what he actually said, word for word and let me decide.

If you had bothered to click on the link within the article, you would already know what he said:

“Someone who says I’m against abortion but says I’m in favor of the death penalty is not really pro-life,” the Pope said. “Someone who says I’m against abortion but I’m in agreement with the inhuman treatment of immigrants in the United States, I don’t know if that’s pro-life.”

He’s pointing out perceived contradictions, the way a liberal from Chicago would.

—I guarantee we treat our deportees far-far better than all other majority Catholic countries may that be the quality of housing, medical care, food, or ensuring their safety.

—The Bible does NOT oppose the death penalty, that’s just a modern interpretation and there is no contradiction. The baby didn’t do anything wrong (no human need for justice) and the mother isn’t some victim.

Not everyone opens his mouth in a more thoughtful manner like John Paul II did.

There is a reason why you see pictures of JPII everywhere, even today. He was doctrinal, thoughtful, measured, political where appropriate, yet compassionate, forgiving and peaceful.
