I doubt the debate about the shroud will ever be resolved.

Unless and until they can prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that it’s genuine, it’s a curiosity, at best and proves nothing.

And even if they do. For what purpose?

Believers already put their faith in Christ. People who believe the shroud is real will continue to do so.

Those who don’t want to believe won’t even if Jesus Himself appeared to Him and did miracles right to their face. There were Jews in the Gospels who met with Him, talked with Him, argued with Him, and saw Him do miracles who still wouldn’t believe.

Maybe you should try to understand their point of view - then and since. They were/are following their God-given Holy Scriptures:

Deuteronomy 13:1-4:

“1. Everything I command you that you shall be careful to do it. You shall neither add to it, nor subtract from it.

2. If there will arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of a dream, and he gives you a sign or a wonder,

3. and the sign or the wonder of which he spoke to you happens, [and he] says, “Let us go after other gods which you have not known, and let us worship them,”

4. you shall not heed the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of a dream; for the Lord, your God, is testing you, to know whether you really love the Lord, your God, with all your heart and with all your soul.”

The Shroud is a physical link to Jesus’ time. I believe it’s genuine without a doubt, but even if it wasn’t, my faith still holds strong. You’re right: we don’t need physical proof that Jesus existed and still DOES exist, but how many crowns of thorns are out there, how many pieces of the True Cross are there?

We know that there is one True Shroud. And it’s an amazing relic.

You’re looking at this through the eyes of faith. Of course we don’t need the Shroud. But for science and archaeology it’s a very important artifact and deserves all of the study that it’s given.
