Pope Rebuked For Claiming The Heart Is Inherently Good: ‘Jesus Taught To The Contrary’
Harbingers Daily ^ | 5/24/24 | Decision Magazine

Pope Francis is under fire after claiming that human beings are “fundamentally good” in a recent interview with 60 Minutes host Norah O’ Donnell. “We are all fundamentally good,” he said. “Yes, there are some rogues and sinners, but the heart itself is good.”

Evangelical leaders have pointed out that the pontiff’s statements are contrary to the teaching of original sin, one of Christianity’s basic doctrines. “If this is true, we don’t need a Savior to die on the Cross,” wrote Eric Metaxas, best-selling author and national radio host.

Alluding to the pope’s statements in light of the 24/7 news cycle, Southern Baptist Convention President Bart Barber posted on X: “The remainder of the content of this news program and all the other programming on your TV suggests otherwise. And certainly Jesus taught to the contrary.”

Allie Beth Stuckey, conservative Christian author and podcast host, pointed out that the Bible refutes Pope Francis’ claims that humanity is inherently good. She quoted Mark 10:18—“No one is good except God alone”—and Jeremiah 17:9—“The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately sick”—among other verses. “This is core to Christianity,” Stuckey wrote. “Because if everyone is basically good, the Gospel is not good news. If the Gospel is not good news, what’s the point?”

Some X users also noted that Pope Francis’ statement echoed Pelagianism, a heresy spread by 5th century monk Pelagius and his followers. They denied original sin and taught that human beings are completely free to choose between good and evil.

Franklin Graham speaks out regularly on sin—and how it is the root cause of every problem in our world. “There is no place in the human heart or on the Earth where sin hasn’t wrought its deadly work,” he writes. “Sin brought death, both physical and spiritual, to the entire human race. When you took your first breath, outside your mother’s womb, you were already a sinner, alienated and separated from a holy God.”

But the Good News of the Gospel is that sin does not need to have the last word. As Franklin pointed out last week at the U.S. Capitol, during the unveiling of his father’s statue: “God so loved this world that He sent His Son on a rescue mission to save sinners. He didn’t come to condemn; He came to save. And if we would confess our sins and repent and believe on the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we can be saved.”

So isn’t that relying on someone’s teaching authority and the oral and written handing down of doctrine? Specifically the doctrine of which books are inspired by God?

Yet you believe in what amounts to total depravity of the heart, assuming you hold the view that that the human heart is totally depraved. This is the first part of TULIP, and a Calvanist doctrine.

I see you want to take an offensive tone, have you any realy objections to my arguments other then to complain about nonsense and irrelevant things?

RCs live under the delusion that all of their theology was being espoused by the Apostles. A cursory review of the word tradition doesn’t support their claim. Nor do the contradictory claims regarding Mary.

The difference is that your CLEARLY anti-Biblical pope MUST have been elected by your (what must be) CLEARLY anti-Biblical cardinals.

There is no cogent, rational, objective argument otherwise. None.

So virtually your entire leadership is anti-Biblical. I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

If you believe in the Bible, and the Bible ONLY (2 Tim 3:16-17, Rev 22:18-19), your choice is crystal clear. It is my prayer, in Jesus’ name, that you make the right one.

You didn’t answer my question.

Appealing to the Bible is, by definition, appealing to the authority of people who were/are not apostles, specifically, those who decided which books the Bible consists of. This is true no matter which version of the Bible you accept. It’s unavoidable.

The appeal to Scripture is the appeal to God who inspired the books. Not man.

Until Martin Luther pulled out his scissors and ink eraser.

Another often debunked falsehood from the one trusting in a man-made piece of cloth to save him/her from the hell fire…which condemns the wearer to the very place they wish to avoid.

“Debunked” only by little men with little minds.

Unless God revealed to you personally which books make up Scripture, then you are relying on other men’s authority to determine what is Scripture and what is not. How can you not see that?

We’re relying upon the Spirit moving these men in the early church to recognize these. There is a difference. How do you not see this?

Apparently, someone doesn't know that all printed bibles are hand-made of tree pulp by many, many different hands over many, many years. Who knows how many versions are out there now and which ones are true?

Ah! Finally! I do see that, and that’s what I wanted you to see. You recognize that there were men who were inspired by God to write the books, AND other men who were inspired by God to recognize which of those books were inspired by God. And you are relying on their authority. You are determining which books to believe based on other men’s God given authority. And not only that, you are believing in the teaching authority (I.e., the magisterium) of these men you believe were divinely inspired, and the handing down through time of that authority (I.e., Tradition). Why, you’re practically Catholic! Well done!

Nope. Roman Catholicism has added to the inspired word the books of the apocrypha which were not recognized by Christ a canonical.

In addition to this error, Rome claims its theology based on tradition was what the apostles were teaching. This is patently false as there was no immaculate conception taught. No purgatory taught. No reliance on Mary as mediatrix, advocatrix or any of the other non biblical claims by Rome.

So no, Roman Catholic tradition is discarded.

I will pray for you as well since you feel you are sitting in judgment of others in place of God. Maybe you will leave judgment to Him.

Maybe this will help, at least regarding the OT.
