HOW THE GENTILES’ SUDDEN
SALVATION WAS SURPRISING:

1. THE “CHOSEN” PEOPLE WERE WELL-AWARE OF IT—Only circumcision signified acceptability. The Jews’ pride was haughty arrogance. As if merciful God would deny salvation to the rest of humanity….

2. SO GOD STAGED AN INTERVENTION, THROUGH THE LEADER OF THE JEWISH CHRISTIANS—an unmistakable denial of the Jews’ meanness and an eternal affirmation of His magnanimity.

3. NOW PAUL COULD WRITE, “…salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel envious.”

4. BECAUSE THE ASTONISHED JEWS NOW GASPED, “So then, God has granted EVEN THE GENTILES repentance unto life.”

To me, the remarkable part of that story is not the Gentiles’ salvation; rather, it is the Jewish believers’ surprise. Salvation is “by grace through faith”, as Paul would codify later—circumcision is not involved.

"Cornu" is Latin for "horn" and we learned from Acts 10:1 that

"There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian [band]"

So I'd go as far as to say that he was on a mission from God.

The surprise was that Gentiles didn’t have to become Jews to be saved. Paul rebuked this kind of thinking in Peter.

I agree. But I suspect many Jews were more simplistic, and jingoistic: if you weren’t born Jewish.... That kind of tribal exclusivity is just human nature.
