MARTYRS IN THE BIBLE
REVELATION’S MARTYRS

THE MARTYRS
UNDER THE ALTAR

REVELATION 6:
When [the Lamb] opened THE FIFTH SEAL, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. They called out in a loud voice, “How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?” Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and brothers who were to be killed as they had been was completed.

THE TWO WITNESSES

REVELATION 6:
“I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth.” These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth.

If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies. This is how anyone who wants to harm them must die. These men have power to shut up the sky so that it will not rain during the time they are prophesying; and they have power to turn the waters into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want.

Now when they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up from the Abyss will attack them, and overpower and kill them.

Their bodies will lie in the street of the great city, which is figuratively called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified. For three and a half days men from every people, tribe, language and nation will gaze on their bodies and refuse them burial. The inhabitants of the earth will gloat over them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts, because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth.

But after the three and a half days a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them. Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.” And they went up to heaven in a cloud, while their enemies looked on.

Apparently very few of these artists knew what ‘sackcloth’ was..........

Today we would call it ‘burlap’ or ‘hopsacking’..............

Back in 1968, I had a pair of pants made of hopsacking material. Itched like crazy................

We had gunny-sacks of burlap for carrying the yellowtail and albacore we'd caught.

The first day I met her, the subject of cats arose and I told my future wife I thought all cats should be gunny-sacked, taken out beyond the three-mile limit and dumped. I was unaware she owned five cats. She traded them for me, two children and a dog.................

Good Morning Dan, and glad Thursday to everyone.

It’s difficult for some to really visualize these things, but they will actually happen; and maybe not so long from today.

Thank you Dan.

Thank you, Dan, as always. Great stained glass windows, especially the last one by Thornton.

Thornton was not as prolific as Tissot and Doré, of course, but he certainly cranked out his fair share of glass!

I am fascinated by the Sandra Bell (11). I keep coming back to it…it is spare, lean and quite evocative.

I put it first because I'm drawn to it, too. If you know your Zechariah, there is no mistaking the meaning of two lone olive trees.

When we bought our new house in '88, I planted a lone olive tree as the focal point in the front yard. Gardening experts recommend against planting in pairs, but now I wish I had. It would have pleased my wife and me, and it would have been fascinating through the years to see how many mentioned the Zechariah connection.

That would have been good…I suspect the gardeners were worried about the trees taking over your entire yard.
