The Best of The GENTILESCHIs
|
“ORAZIO GENTILESCH (1562—1639), Italian Baroque painter, [was] one of the more important painters who came under the influence of Caravaggio and was one of the more successful interpreters of his style. His daughter, ARTEMISIA Gentileschi, who was trained in his studio, also became a noteworthy Baroque artist. excerpted from Britannica.
“ARTEMISIA GENTILESCHI (1593 – 1656) was an Italian Baroque painter. Gentileschi is considered among the most accomplished seventeenth-century artists, initially working in the style of Caravaggio. She was producing professional work by the age of 15. In an era when women had few opportunities to pursue artistic training or work as professional artists, Gentileschi was the first woman to become a member of the Accademia di Arte del Disegno in Florence and she had an international clientele. “Many of Gentileschi's paintings feature women from myths, allegories, and the Bible, including victims, suicides, and warriors. “Gentileschi was known for being able to depict the female figure with great naturalism and for her skill in handling colour to express dimension and drama. “She is now regarded as one of the most progressive and expressive painters of her generation.” excerpted from Wikipedia

Again, thanks.
I had someone once say of Michelangelo's David, which applies to "Bathsheba at Her Bath" or the Infant suckling on his Mother's breast, was "pornographic." Rankled me much. In a time when much of the world was illiterate, pictures and sculpture served as story telling devices, and as a result the brilliance in both vision and craft of yesterday's Doré or today's Gentileschi family served to convey these stories. Artistry is forever, seen through visionary eyes and talented hands,

Good Morning Dan, and happy Thursday to all.
These are fantastic; such skill indeed. It’s good to hear of a female artist who was so recognized. My personal favorite is the top one; a painting of the artist while painting.
Thank You for this ministry Dan!

Prudes are entitled to their opinions, or course—always bearing in mind the odious adage that opinions are like ani: everyone has one, and they all stink.

I wonder if Orazio is up in heaven right now working on his nth version of Rest on the Trip to Egypt.

Two remarkable artists. I am attracted more to the work of the father, his painting of the lute girl is wonderful, full of grace. His meticulous attention to details was so inspiring and pleasing to the eyes that Dutch painters, famous for their amazing renderings of fabrics, improved their craft by studying Orazio’s works.

--- "Prudes are entitled to their opinions, or course—always bearing in mind the odious adage that opinions are like ani: everyone has one, and they all stink."
That comment is worth far more than a chuckle. One "prude" raged against the da Vinci "Vitruvian Man." Western civilization owes so much to great art and so little to the prudes of this world.
To: Worldtraveler once upon a time
Paul relayed to us a challenge for self-censorship, in Ephesians 5:3-4:
But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.
"Prudes" have an important role to play in reminding us, just as does any believer who notices any Scripture being violated among the brethren.
