I had someone once say of Michelangelo's David, which applies to "Bathsheba at Her Bath" or the Infant suckling on his Mother's breast, was "pornographic." Rankled me much. In a time when much of the world was illiterate, pictures and sculpture served as story telling devices, and as a result the brilliance in both vision and craft of yesterday's Doré or today's Gentileschi family served to convey these stories. Two remarkable artists. I am attracted more to the work of the father, his painting of the lute girl is wonderful, full of grace. His meticulous attention to details was so inspiring and pleasing to the eyes that Dutch painters, famous for their amazing renderings of fabrics, improved their craft by studying Orazio’s works.

That comment is worth far more than a chuckle. One "prude" raged against the da Vinci "Vitruvian Man." Western civilization owes so much to great art and so little to the prudes of this world.

Paul relayed to us a challenge for self-censorship, in Ephesians 5:3-4:

But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.

"Prudes" have an important role to play in reminding us, just as does any believer who notices any Scripture being violated among the brethren.
