Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem
Mark 2
Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners
13 Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them. 14 As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.
15 While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
17 On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem
Our Father in Heaven,
How Hallowed,
Magnificent,
and Sanctified
is Your Most Holy Name!
How Blessed and How True is Your Word,
and How Mighty!
How Glorious,
to Span the Millennia,
To be Unfettered by Time and Space,
To Know The End from the Beginning
and the beginning from The End!
For it is You, Oh LORD,
Who designed the Galaxies with Your Compass,
And Mapped Out the Vast Reaches of Space
With Your Word and Your Omniscient Imagination!
Scientists tell us even the heavens are finite.
But YOU are Infinite!
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

During the 80's and 90's, I did a lot of driving around Massachusetts. I had a large number of customers in Worcester and Fitchburg, and the fastest way to get there was via the Massachusetts Turnpike. This was a Toll Road, but cheap enough if one had important gigs in the Western part of the State. The smart thing to do was to have a bucket of quarters in the front seat, so that you could throw exact change into a bin. The gate would open, and you were on your way.
If you didn't have exact change, you had to wait in a long line with other drivers to go through the one toll booth that was attended by a human being. This person was the only one who could make change, and stood between you and the rest of your journey. These folks were often bored, lonely, and cranky. The drivers, who were already late for work, did not make it any easier, as they held up the line, asking directions, questions about the weather, or complaining about Toll Increases and Government in General. The Drivers had a Love-Hate Relationship with the Mass Pike. It cost money, but it did get you there faster.
Florida has a Turnpike too. I only used it to go to Orlando or further North, because I95 from Miami to Jupiter (Palm Beach County) was a NIGHTMARE. For local trips, I used secondary roads that, even with stop lights, could be faster than I95. The Florida Turnpike was even more expensive than the Mass Pike, and the pavement was NOISIER. At the end of a 3 hour trip to Orlando on the Harley, I would be totally deaf from the sound of my tires on that strange, gravely pavement. The Florida Turnpike eventually came up with a scheme to use transponders, so you could just zoom past the Toll Booths, but those didn't work on a Motorcycle. It got to the point where I would rather do 5 hours on I95 rather than 4 on the Turnpike. At least I95 had quieter pavement! And, for some arcane reason, the Toll Collectors in Florida seemed even MORE cranky than the ones in Massachusetts. Maybe they just didn't like Bikers.
This recent Thanksgiving, my Sister invited me to her home in Maine 300 miles away. She told me that, once I crossed the New Hampshire border, it was a Toll Road. Since I didn't have a transponder, I was told to stash a bunch of cash in the visor so I would have it handy for the Toll Collectors. It was about $13.00 in little increments each way, a dollar here, and a dollar there. (Grrrr...I thought. I'm going to have to deal with over ten cranky Toll Collectors each way!) I set off on my journey, anticipating the worst.
All the way North, I pulled up in the "CASH ONLY" line to make change. The Toll Collectors, men and women, were all friendly, chatty, efficient, and wished me a safe journey and a "Happy Thanksgiving". More than one of them commented on the music I was playing on my iPod. One lady said she really liked what she was hearing. "Who is that?" she asked. It was with incredible satisfaction that I answered that it was ME, as I was playing my 2002 CD "All in My Good Time".
Another Toll Collector commented upon some Blues I was playing, and said how much she loved the Blues. This was in a Toll Booth, in the Snow, on a Holiday Weekend.
I felt as though I had crossed the border into the Twilight Zone!
Many weeks later, after the Christmas rush, I had totally run out of money (Christmas can do that to you). As I was driving with the sun in my eyes, wondering if I would have enough money to put gas in my tank, I lowered the visor and a $20.00 bill fluttered down into my lap. I couldn't figure out it had come from, but was very happy to get it! Then I remembered the trip to Maine. It must have been left over from my stash of Toll Money. It couldn't have fluttered down at a better time.
Levi son of Alphaeus was a Tax Collector. My Bible Commentary says that these guys were set up in a kind of "Toll Booth" which would be on the main road. Like the 87,000 Armed IRS Agents that the present administration has tried to force upon us, the Tax Collectors of the Roman Empire were NOT loved by the People. They were seen as Extortionists, Robbers, and Traitors to their own People. Unlike the Toll-Collectors, who receive a salary and have to collect the EXACT amount due, the Tax Collectors got rich by overcharging, giving the Romans their due, and skimming off the rest for themselves. As if working with the Romans to oppress the people weren't enough, the Tax-Collectors had plenty of their own "Oppression" going on. No wonder they were despised. Levi was no exception. The Gospel indicates that he had a house big enough for a party full of sinners just like him.
Of course, the Pharisees and other Self-Righteous people had plenty to say about it! I love Jesus's response that "It is the sick who need the physician".
The name "Matthew", which means "Gift of God" may have been an Apostolic Name given to Levi by Jesus Himself.
Like the $20.00 Bill that flutters down from what seems to be nowhere, His Grace comes when we least expect it and need it the most.

Psalm 65
To the leader. A Psalm of David. A Song.
1 Praise is due to you,
O God, in Zion;
and to you shall vows be performed,
2 O you who answer prayer!
To you all flesh shall come.
3 When deeds of iniquity overwhelm us,
you forgive our transgressions.
4 Happy are those whom you choose and bring near
to live in your courts.
We shall be satisfied with the goodness of your house,
your holy temple.
5 By awesome deeds you answer us with deliverance,
O God of our salvation;
you are the hope of all the ends of the earth
and of the farthest seas.
6 By your* strength you established the mountains;
you are girded with might.
7 You silence the roaring of the seas,
the roaring of their waves,
the tumult of the peoples.
8 Those who live at earth’s farthest bounds are awed by your signs;
you make the gateways of the morning and the evening shout for joy.
9 You visit the earth and water it,
you greatly enrich it;
the river of God is full of water;
you provide the people with grain,
for so you have prepared it.
10 You water its furrows abundantly,
settling its ridges,
softening it with showers,
and blessing its growth.
11 You crown the year with your bounty;
your wagon tracks overflow with richness.
12 The pastures of the wilderness overflow,
the hills gird themselves with joy,
13 the meadows clothe themselves with flocks,
the valleys deck themselves with grain,
they shout and sing together for joy.
