Mark 1
Jesus Announces the Good News

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Almighty and Eternal Father,
Strong To Save,
Slow To Anger,
and Infinitely Merciful and Just,
Holy and Sanctified is Your Most Hallowed and Wonderful Name!
How Marvelous Are Your Works,
That the Very Heavens
Declare Your Glory,
Without Embarrassment,
they Just Burst Forth in Sumptuous, Overwhelming Praise!
The Stars,
The Rocks,
The Waterfalls,
Even The Lowly Grasses of The Field
Burst Forth into Riotous Colors,
In Worship of Their Awesome Creator!
And yet we,
The Crown of Your Creation,
That which You Made in Your Image,
That in Whom You Breathed Your Spirit,
Those in Whom You Share in Your Creative Genius,
unlike ANY OTHER CREATURE of Your Wonderful Works,
Continue to rebel against You,
And sin against You and against Our Fellow Man,
and not Believe You,
and Disobey You, and not follow Your Precepts,
even when You give us Your Word.
Forgive us, Oh Lord.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

1. Two Bobs and a Bruce: It amazes me that even young musicians in their twenties and thirties are more likely to play 50-year-old songs from MY "Good Old Days", rather than the current Pop Hits. The soloists and duos that gig in restaurants and taverns all seem to draw from the repertoires of The Beatles, The Grateful Dead, James Taylor, and even Johnny Cash. The audience often sings along, because they know these songs by heart. The younger musicians have enormous respect for old folks like me, because I was around when those songs were OUR "Pop Hits".

However, there are three artists that most soloists avoid, because of their densely-packed lyrics. They are Bob Dylan, Bob Seger, and Bruce Springsteen. Sometimes there are more lyrics than there are beats in the line. Because of this, they are showstoppers, in much the same way as the infamous "Patter Songs" in a Gilbert & Sullivan Operetta.

"Subterranean Homesick Blues" (Dylan), "Night Moves" (Seger), and "Born To Run" (Springsteen), are all examples of this kind of song. A wise soloist knows enough to save this kind of song till the end of the evening, as an encore, or as a "Big Number" to end a set. The audience hardly ever sings along, but sits there in rapt attention.

2. The Five "W's": Journalism 101 used to teach that one should fit as many of the "Five W's" into the first line of text. I teach that same principle in Songwriting. The "Five W's" are: Who, When, Where, and What, and finally, "Why". We can see this demonstrated in the first line of The Eagles Song "Hotel California":

"On a Dark Desert Highway, Cool Wind in My Hair..."

1. Where?...On a Dark Desert Highway
2. When?...At Night, obviously.
3. Who?.. Me, of course. The wind is in MY hair.
4. What?...I could be on a motorcycle or in a convertible, as I am on the highway, at night, and the wind is in my hair.

The song never tells us WHY, but that's part of the mystery of the song itself.

In Today's Reading, we have ONE sentence that would get an "A" in Old-School Journalism:

14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

1. When: After John was put in prison...This is evidence of the early writing of Mark's Gospel, as there were still many people alive who remembered John. This provides us with a timeline of the Ministry of Jesus and places it into the reader's perspective.
2: Who and Where: Jesus went into Galilee You can't get any more succinct than that.
3. What: proclaiming the good news of God. "What" will often be an action verb, as in "WHAT are you doing?"
4: Why?...“The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”... Why did Jesus come to earth? In this simple sentence, He tells us.

The Passion of St. Matthew an The Passion of St. John were both made into Cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach. The Passion according to Luke was made into a Rock Opera called "Jesus Christ Superstar". But nobody seems to have set the Gospel of Mark to music. Could it be that Mark didn't give us enough lyrics? All three of the aforementioned musical works are over two hours long. Mark might fill a half-hour, but it would be jam-packed with FACTS.

Psalm 69

To the leader: according to Lilies. Of David.

1 Save me, O God,
for the waters have come up to my neck.
2 I sink in deep mire,
where there is no foothold;
I have come into deep waters,
and the flood sweeps over me.
3 I am weary with my crying;
my throat is parched.
My eyes grow dim
with waiting for my God.

4 More in number than the hairs of my head
are those who hate me without cause;
many are those who would destroy me,
my enemies who accuse me falsely.
What I did not steal
must I now restore?
5 O God, you know my folly;
the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you.

6 Do not let those who hope in you be put to shame because of me,
O Lord God of hosts;
do not let those who seek you be dishonoured because of me,
O God of Israel.
7 It is for your sake that I have borne reproach,
that shame has covered my face.
8 I have become a stranger to my kindred,
an alien to my mother’s children.

9 It is zeal for your house that has consumed me;
the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.
10 When I humbled my soul with fasting,*
they insulted me for doing so.
11 When I made sackcloth my clothing,
I became a byword to them.
12 I am the subject of gossip for those who sit in the gate,
and the drunkards make songs about me.

13 But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord.
At an acceptable time, O God,
in the abundance of your steadfast love, answer me.
With your faithful help 14rescue me
from sinking in the mire;
let me be delivered from my enemies
and from the deep waters.
15 Do not let the flood sweep over me,
or the deep swallow me up,
or the Pit close its mouth over me.

16 Answer me, O Lord, for your steadfast love is good;
according to your abundant mercy, turn to me.
17 Do not hide your face from your servant,
for I am in distress—make haste to answer me.
18 Draw near to me, redeem me,
set me free because of my enemies.

19 You know the insults I receive,
and my shame and dishonour;
my foes are all known to you.
20 Insults have broken my heart,
so that I am in despair.
I looked for pity, but there was none;
and for comforters, but I found none.
21 They gave me poison for food,
and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

22 Let their table be a trap for them,
a snare for their allies.
23 Let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see,
and make their loins tremble continually.
24 Pour out your indignation upon them,
and let your burning anger overtake them.
25 May their camp be a desolation;
let no one live in their tents.
26 For they persecute those whom you have struck down,
and those whom you have wounded, they attack still more.*
27 Add guilt to their guilt;
may they have no acquittal from you.
28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living;
let them not be enrolled among the righteous.
29 But I am lowly and in pain;
let your salvation, O God, protect me.

30 I will praise the name of God with a song;
I will magnify him with thanksgiving.
31 This will please the Lord more than an ox
or a bull with horns and hoofs.
32 Let the oppressed see it and be glad;
you who seek God, let your hearts revive.
33 For the Lord hears the needy,
and does not despise his own that are in bonds.

34 Let heaven and earth praise him,
the seas and everything that moves in them.
35 For God will save Zion
and rebuild the cities of Judah;
and his servants shall live* there and possess it;
36 the children of his servants shall inherit it,
and those who love his name shall live in it.
