CHAPTER 13

Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.

“The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’

“ ‘An enemy did this,’ he replied.

“The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’

“ ‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’ ”

The following is a story from a Baptist sermon I heard in the 60’s as a child:

A young man was in love with farmers daughter and sought to marry her.

He went through all the required rituals of his society of the day, courting, time etc.

Finally the day came when he would ask the girl’s father for his daughter’s hand in marriage.

NO! was the father’s reply. He did not like the young man and was unsure as to whether he could provide for his daughter’s future.

Enraged, the young man left the father’s house and went off to make a plan.

He knew this man had some of the finest bottom land in the country, rich, fertile black loamy land that was highly prized and very valuable.

So, in a flash the young man knew what he would do.

Now anybody that was raised in the rural South knows what Johnson Grass is. Before the introduction of modern herbicides, it was the bane of farmers all across the agricultural world. It spreads like wildfire, is unfit for cattle or horses, can be poisonous in large quantities and will force out outer crops and forage plants.

The young man went out and gathered as much Johnson grass and seeds as he could, and transferred and planted the evil weeds all over the farmer’s pristine croplands.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the farmer’s daughter had heard what the father had done and was beside herself with inconsolable grief.

Finally the father, seeing how much she loved the young man relented.

He called for the young man to return to the house and he would give him his daughter’s hand in marriage.

The wedding was a joyous affair and all the neighboring farmers were there to help celebrate.

The wedding ceremony was over and the reception began, the farmer called for attention and announced to the assembled celebrants, “I have given them my fatherly blessing, and now to show that there is no malice in my heart, I give to them as my wedding present, my 40 acres of prime bottom land!”......................................

Johnson grass that is resistant to the common herbicide glyphosate has been found in Argentina and the United States.

Even glyphosate, AKA ROUNDUP! , won't kill it!...............
