Remarkable paintings. Pompeo Batoni at #1, beautiful deep concentration on the face of Matthew while he is listening to the angel.
#3 and #20 by Kurt Wenner. He is an internationally known artist famous for his 3-D street paintings.
The wonderful Caravaggio at #8. This is the middle paintings located in San Luigi dei Francesi Church in Roma. It is flanked by the Call of St. Matthew on one side and the Saint’s martyrdom on the other side. It has always been in this Church since the beginning of the 17th c.
# 14 by Valentin de Boulogne, St. Mark is shown with his symbol, the lion.
#15, a powerful statue of St. Mark on the winged lion by Deloye. The Lion of Saint Mark is also the symbol of the city of Venice. Venetian tradition states that when St. Mark was traveling through Europe, he arrived at a lagoon in Venice, where an angel appeared to him and said “May Peace be with you, Mark, my evangelist. Here your body will rest.” The remains of St. Mark are interred in the Basilica of St. Mark in Venice.

You do a wonderful job bringing before viewers artists they may have never encountered before. In my case it is Artus Wolffort. A search indicates, “his works were not well known until the late 1970s and some of his paintings were even classified as early works by Rubens.”

I was musing recently how very artists I have stumbled upon: must be approaching 1,000. Many of them allowed the Holy Spirit to work through them.

Every time I see a Caravaggio, I am stunned by the light he creates.

Caravaggio treatment of light and shade was innovative for the time and his dramatic sense of staging influenced the course of western art. He was a true genius.
