SHOULD JOSEPH MARRY MARY?
|
M A T T H E W CHAPTER 1 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
1 JAMES TISSOT "The Anxiety of Saint Joseph" But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because HE WILL SAVE HIS PEOPLE FROM THEIR SINS.”
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him IMMANUEL”—which means, “GOD WITH US.” When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

Mine is #18. Simple, elegant. Almost intimate.

Wonderful choice, Debbie.
I wonder which ol' Phillippe himself would choose, his #25 or his very similar #24?

#24 was his first attempt, no doubt.

Good Morning Dan, and greetings to all.
These are all wonderful; appreciate you posting two from the same artist (24 & 25 De Champaigne). Such talent, depicted differently.
Thank you Dan =:^)

Like what Jack Nicholson said after finally kissing Helen Hunt in As Good As It Gets: "I KNOW I can do better than that!"

Thanks, Leon. It’s not often artists get to depict someone dreaming—I expect it might take multiple tries to be satisfied.

Mine too. I like the play of internal light and shadow.
That being said, the artists did a good job of capturing just the event, a lone sleeping man and angelic presence, without a crowd of popes, princes, and patrons...

without a crowd of popes, princes, and patrons Whenever I can, I deliberately omit paintings containing any of those three p's. They instantly disqualify a work for inclusion, unless there is some greater factor necessitating placement.

Yes Dan, that is true, and probably difficult to depict in a believable manner.
I keep looking at # 1, Tissot; Joseph certainly looks to be deep in thought. I like the ‘street scene’ view outside of his shop also.

Many worthy paintings. Of note is #18 by Georges de La Tour, the 17th c. French painter. In his artistic maturity he created scenes illuminated just by the light of a candle, conveying a simplicity that expresses wonder and a contemplative quiet. His paintings look almost modern.
#25 by Philippe de Champaigne is also great. Joseph is sleeping on a deeply padded bed, the simplicity of his yellow cloak and of his sandals signify his humility.

Joseph had plenty to ponder, an absolutely unique situation.

La Tour and Stom both liked candle-power.
