I've heard that often and I don't doubt it's true in many people in the past. It's kind of taken on urban legend status like the stories of the mean nuns with the rulers-- many more people tell the story as a joke than actually experienced it. Neither one is something you'd find today, or in the last 60 or 70 years or so. I was told that I shouldn’t read the Bible because I couldn’t understand it. The priests and nuns were trained and knew how to interpret it and if I had questions, I should ask them and they’d tell me what it meant.
And that was in the late 60’s, and told me by a nun.

And that was in the late 60’s, and told me by a nun. Like I said, it happened to some decades ago. It’s not the case now and hasn’t been for a while. The Church in recent years (especially Pope Benedict) has made it a point to encourage Bible reading. There are so many good Catholic Bible studies and resources now there is really no excuse.
