The Bible In Paintings 2 ENCOURAGEMENT FOR APPRECIATING AND APPLYING GOD'S MESSAGE |
QUEEN OF SHEBA ORCHID, genus Thelymitra
1st KINGS CHAPTER 10 When the queen of Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon and his relation to the name of the LORD, she came to test him with hard questions. Arriving at Jerusalem with a very great caravan—with camels carrying spices, large quantities of gold, and precious stones—she came to Solomon and talked with him about all that she had on her mind. Solomon answered all her questions; nothing was too hard for the king to explain to her. When the queen of Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon and the palace he had built, the food on his table, the seating of his officials, the attending servants in their robes, his cupbearers, and the burnt offerings he made at the temple of the LORD, she was overwhelmed. She said to the king, “The report I heard in my own country about your achievements and your wisdom is true. But I did not believe these things until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was told me; in wisdom and wealth you have far exceeded the report I heard. How happy your men must be! How happy your officials, who continually stand before you and hear your wisdom! PRAISE BE TO THE LORD YOUR GOD, who has delighted in you and placed you on the throne of Israel. Because of THE LORD’S ETERNAL LOVE FOR ISRAEL, he has made you king, to maintain justice and righteousness.” And she gave the king 120 talents b of gold, large quantities of spices, and precious stones. Never again were so many spices brought in as those the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon. King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba all she desired and asked for, besides what he had given her out of his royal bounty. Then she left and returned with her retinue to her own country.

Great Tissot! #46, just because I love Northern Renaissance art. A beautiful mosaic at #54. Thanks, Dan!

Very nice. I particularly like #29 and #45. 45 especially captures it for me ... both Solomon and the Queen “look right”, to me, and Solomon seems to me to be greeting her as an equal.
#53 ... What’s with the guard? Bored? Passed out drunk? The two children and the man behind him are all giving the “what’s your malfunction?” look.

Good question. Wondered about that, too. Perhaps it’s merely a shout-out of the artist’s drunkard brother-in-law, or something.

Morning, Leon. Viewers’ comments always enlighten me, too, especially because I know so very little about art.

What an orchid!
Queen of Sheba These beautiful orchids are only found in Western Australia where they are one of this State’s most protected species. They cannot be picked or transplanted and can only be viewed in their natural habitat. They have a special relationship with a specific soil fungus and therefore cannot survive outside of that environment. http://orchidswa.com.au/thelymitra-sun-orchids/queen-of-sheba/

#52 by Erte is very symmetrical. Symmetry in human features is often recognized across cultures as "beauty".
Look at the way he did the hair...perfectly spiraled opposites (start at the middle forehead)...and an imaginative way to draw negroid hair...just excellent.
And then he 'set off' the symmetry with the odd-numbered 5 stars on the face, and the head is 'turning' left, so the neck lines are different.
Just a creative/genius way to give 'life' to symmetry, very subtle!
Being a fan of art deco styles...(in architecture, what building do you immediately think of?)...I'm inclined to like #52 anyway by default!
To: spankalib
I'm with you about Erté's portrait. You walked us through its finer points--its symmetry and subtlety--quite nicely, but you neglected, John, to explain her very blue eyes. |
The art-deco edifice I thought of immediately was NYC's Chrysler Building. And you?

LOL! When you see blue eyes in a black female...correction, when I see blue eyes in a black female...it is beautiful! Just a striking contrast!
Chrysler - EGGGZACLY!

There are a lot of clothing anachronisms in a lot of the paintings.
