Yes, indeed. Artists painted what they knew--there was no internet or photography, and travel to the Middle East was an enormous chore--and time travel remains an impossibility. So, throughout this series we have encountered that provincialism again and again. Moreover, the patrons who paid the artists often demanded the result be to their specifications.
There are some noteworthy exceptions, rare artists who actually traveled to the Holy Land to educate themselves, James Tissot and William Brassey Hole among them.
