Our Father In Heaven,
Hallowed be Your Most Holy and Wonderful Name!

To catch up with the sun
But it's sinking,
And racing around to come back behind you again..." (Pink Floyd, from the song "Time.")


These dreary words from an even drearier song are about youth wasting time until age takes it away. It's a sad philosophy from a disfunctional mind, but echoes Aristotle's view of the Universe that Galileo taught against. It shows the person (Earth) as stationary with the Sun racing around him. We know now, of course, that Galileo was right and the religious authorities were wrong on that one. It is interesting that Pink Floyd's lyrics reflect the erroneous theory of Man being the center of the Universe. And, if you look at it carefully, one can see that egocentrism is a feature of many mental illnesses. Paranoia, Narcissism, Meglomania, Tyrrany, and Oppression can be linked to it. It's all about Me, Me, Me!

The Author of Hebrews takes a different view of Time. He (or she!) knows that Time is precious and we don't have a lot of it. Therefore the Author calls Prayer a "Sacrifice". In taking time to Praise God, especially when we are not feeling like doing it, we are sacrificing the one thing we can't manufacture for ourselves...Time. Jesus said in The Sermon on the Mount that no amount of worrying can add a second to our lives. He might have added that worrying actually may TAKE Time away from us, in the form of stress-related illnesses and death.

A "Sacrifice of Praise" may take some Time, but it is Worth it! It's much healthier than "frittering away in an offhand way" Time that could be spent Praising God, and Growing in Grace and Peace.
