MATTHEW
Ch. 3

3 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”

15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.

16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

MARK
Ch. 1

9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

LUKE
Ch. 3

21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

JOHN
Ch. 1

32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”

METHODICAL study of the Bible and diminishment of sin behavior

NOT conferred by BAPTISM alone

i thought so, too. It’s the nearest thing on this thread—so I’m glad you singled it out, was hoping someone would—nearest to suggesting immersion rather than sprinkling (although etabeta contributed another). Please see my Disclaimer at the bottom of Part 2, tomorrow.

If all they were going to do was sprinkle why were they standing in the river?..................

And yet they all were: every picture showing sprinkling, which is all of them, shows them standing in the river. Why do this at the river at all, if sprinkling is John’s procedure?

In the early centuries Christians were ordinarily baptized by immersion after removing all their clothes. In the West, however, sprinkling gradually replaced immersion, thus most medieval and later images show John pouring water on Jesus’ head.

In more recent times, it seems to have become more of a distinctive between Catholicism and Evangelicalism. I’m suggesting—observing, not arguing for—that immersion is making a comeback.

“Verrocchio had already done the main work. Leonardo painted an angel who was holding some garments; and despite his youth, he executed it in such a manner that his angel was far better that the figures painted by Verrocchio. This was the reason why Andrea would never touch colours again, he was so ashamed that a boy understood their use better than he did. ”
Regarding number 27 from an art historian Giorgio Vasari in the 1500s.

Yes, I read that. Giorgio Vasari wrote a book about the most prominent artists in painting up to his time but it is not very reliable, too many unsubstantiated observations. Still has great value and we can learn a lot from this first art historian.

Wonder what Vasari’s motive was as Verrocchio continued painting until his death. He was a wonderful artist.

Check this out! From the description: “The Baptism Site on the Jordan side of the Jordan River is one of the most important recent discoveries in biblical archaeology. Excavations only began here in 1996, following Jordan’s peace treaty with Israel in 1994, but have already uncovered more than 20 churches, caves and baptismal pools dating from the Roman and Byzantine periods.”

Good point. Even the Etheopian Eunuch recognized the need for considerable moving water for being baptized, so he and Philip went ‘down into the river’. “As I went down in the river to pray, studyin’ about that good old day, and who should wear the robe and crowns, Oh Lord show me the way”

My 'art eye' is not able to differentiate btwn Verrocchio's colors & DaVinci's. I'll take your word it's there, and want to keep educating my eye for this great art! (Thanks Dannyboy!)

I too thought #6, the Ghiberti bronze panel was marvelous. It amazes me. How did he do that? *cough* about 600 years ago?

eta, is #15 a type of mannerism? The bodies seem almost too dramatic!

Leonardo’s angel stands out for the eloquent pose, the folds of the garments, the sweetness of her expression, all missing in the other angel. Look at the Madonna of the Rocks, you will see the similarity with this angel, but more expressive and beautiful.
Dan, it was normal to have other artists take over part of a painting. In the Verrocchio studio, there were apprentices who went on to be famous, like Leonardo.
Yes, spankalib, #15 would be considered Northern Mannerism or pre-Baroque.
