He says that she has been able to sleep but some of the larger spasms do wake her up briefly.

Hey, did the doctors ask her if she had been exposed to a pesticide or organophosphate or any kind of lawn/garden spraying recently?

Sounds like diabetic neuropathy. I had the same thing. It was like being electrocuted. Extremely painful. It was rhythmic, the spasms happen exactly the same interval, every 10 second or 20 seconds, etc... and my body would jump, like electricity was being shot down my legs. I would grab which ever leg was having a spasm and squeeze trying to make it stop.
And I had a mini-stroke where I couldn't move at all for hours.
