Sounds like diabetic neuropathy. I had the same thing. It was like being electrocuted. Extremely painful. It was rhythmic, the spasms happen exactly the same interval, every 10 second or 20 seconds, etc... and my body would jump, like electricity was being shot down my legs. I would grab which ever leg was having a spasm and squeeze trying to make it stop.
And I had a mini-stroke where I couldn't move at all for hours.

Sounds similar to RLS. (Restless Leg Syndrome). Gabapentin-helped, must be taken at regular intervals.
