Looks likes it's time for Jorge to tackle the Catholic Catechism again with his red pen. Capital punishment: immoral. Self-defense: immoral. Adultery: moral, if accompanied by a francispriest.
And speaking of red, did the Red Pope demand Red China destroy its nuclear weapons in his secret money for souls deal?

If not for the atomic bomb, padre, you would be speaking Japanese and heading a Buddhist monastery.

Persuade the rest of the world to abandon their nukes and nuclear aspirations Comrade Pope, and then get back to us.

Guess the Pope thinks it would have been more "moral" for millions of Japanese to die in an invasion than hundreds of thousands with the nukes.
He sure likes to babble on about subjects he knows nothing about . . .
To: ebb tide
What about Italy and the Vatican being defended by NATO conventional weaponry, is that immoral too?

The pope is doing his part. Vatican City does not possess any nukes.
I get the feeling that Pope Francis would love to tell American Catholics that voting for Trump is a grave sin except that the American bishops may have warned him that that would backfire.

As I recall, being from Argentina, neither he nor his family had any skin in the game. It looks different when you are one of ten marines in your squad to survive Okinawa, and they are putting you on a landing craft headed to Japan.
To: colorado tanker
Some estimates are that 400,000 to 800,000 Americans would have died in the invasion of Japan (after 400,000 had already died in WWII)--but the true figure might have been much higher, and probably the Japanese death toll would have been in the millions. It was bad luck that the civilians in Hiroshima had to die but if not for Hiroshima the death toll would have been immensely greater.
If I had been Truman I might have waited a few more days before using the second bomb, but otherwise I can't fault him. My father would have been part of the invasion and very well might have died in Japan.
To: oldplayer
As a Marine who survived both Guam and Okinawa, my father had no doubt that Truman did the right thing.
