Wester has zero authority to forbid Holy Communion on the tongue.

The good Archbishop Sample, of Portland, Oregon, has just issued a directive that his priests are forbidden to refuse administering Holy Communion on the tongue.

We are now seeing:

Bishop Against Bishop

Saint John Cysostom - “The road to Hell is paved with the bones of priests and monks, and the skulls of bishops are the lamp posts that light the path.”

Don’t people touch more things with their hands than with their tongues? Perhaps he was thinking of dogs.

In the source documents, it's worth noting the Archdiocese had several flu season changes in place, such as refraining from hand-holding during the Our Father, embracing etc during the Sign of Peace, and no distribution of Communion via Chalice.

And yet...the good Abp singles out Communion on the tongue for reprimand, which is likely the choice of a vast minority of Catholics. And I suspect the majority of parishioners remain slap-happy during the Sign of Peace.

I bet the Communion on the tongue ban in this Archdiocese will remain until, oh, the next Pontificate.

While contemplating receiving by hand or tongue, it occurred to me I’ve probably committed a thousand times more sins with my tongue than my hand.

If you believe the host is the Body of Christ, then there would be no concern of germs. Can’t believe an bishop would issue such a directive. But in my Archdiocese of New Orleans our Archbishop made it a recommendation, but the thinking is still the same. Anyt excuse to get communicants to receive Holy Communion in the hand.

Don’t you receive by tongue, at least ultimately, in either case?

So after shaking hands and opening doors our tongues are in danger of catching a virus from the Blessed Sacrament?
