I admire her for having a son who made something of himself.

I would argue that Constantine wouldn't have made as much of himself as he did without Helena's influence. She seems to have been a guiding force throughout his whole life.

My Tom could be emperor if he had more initiative.

Maybe God will send him a vision of a Cross in the Sky? :-)

That's why I admire HER more than him, because I assume she's responsible for motivating him to get off his tuchus and achieve.

Anything is possible. I've given him a vision of himself on the curb with a sign that says, "Will be amusing for food," unless he has a lease on an apartment by December 31, 2019. Once he's out in the World, I expect he'll quickly be motivated to move up the ladder!
