Sorry Pee Wee.

Now you have to insult and call names.

Tell it to your FATHER at confession time.

And telling me what I have to do in confession. Strange.

Then why do Catholics address their priests as *Father _________*? Why does Catholicism assign the very title to their priests that Jesus told His disciples NOT to use?

We see later in Scripture, after Jesus' discourse about being Pharisees, that Paul addresses himself as father - for I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. And there are numerous places in scripture where the disciples use phrases like "my children", "my son", "my little children" as though they are their father.

And that's the meaning and intention that not only Catholics but also Eastern Orthodox follow. I guess they could address them as, for example, "John, who became my father in Christ Jesus through the gospel". But that becomes cumbersome after a while. So, it is truncated to Father John, but it still has the same meaning and usage as Paul and the other disciples intended.

You seem to be interested in the Eastern Orthodox, so this reference may be useful to you.

the downside is praying to a created being rather than the creator.

It’s no different than asking someone on earth to pray for you. We believe Mary is just as much alive as anyone on earth. These things may not have been explained to you before so there you go.

You may disagree saying such things as, “There’s no biblical evidence she can hear your prayers”, and/or “it’s necromancy to pray to the dead” but I’m not interested in debating these and other same tired “arguments” related to intercessory prayer. Someone else may take up that mantle if you so desire to go down that road. Or feel free to read here: https://www.catholic.com/tract/praying-to-the-saints

There’s really nothing else to say on the matter, other than “I don’t agree with that use of Scripture”. Which is fine, really. But it can’t be said we are doing something *against* Scripture. Not by any reasonable person anyway.

"This is correct...except you don't see people praying to Abraham, Isaac or Jacob."

There's a lot you don't know!

From a recommended prayer for the dying:

Response: Deliver Your servant, O Lord.

As you delivered Noah from the flood./

Deliver your servant, O Lord,

As you delivered Abraham from Ur of the Chaldees (Resp.) "deliver...")
As you delivered Job from his sufferings (Resp.)
As you delivered Moses from the hand of the Pharoah(Resp.)
As you delivered Daniel from the den of lions(Resp.)
As you delivered the three young men from the fiery furnace.(Resp.)
As you delivered Susanna from her false accusers(Resp.)
As you delivered David from the attacks of Saul and Goliath(Resp.)
As you delivered the daughter of Abraham who could not stand up straight,(Resp.)
As you delivered Peter and Paul from prison (Resp.)
Through the prayers of these, and of all your holy men and women, (Resp.)
Deliver your servant, Lord, through Jesus our Savior,
who suffered death for us and gave us eternal life. Amen.

Prayers to Mary and saints certainly can be disagreed with by reasonable people. You are not interested in discussion and that is fine. You have a right to be wrong. But you are the one that asked what downside there is to praying to Mary. I answered your question.

And you don’t even realize that you have merely added to the proof that Catholicism which you teach others is praying to non-living beings. It would be sad to witness such dullardry if it were not so telling of which direction YOU are leading people.

From a recommended prayer for the dying:...

Means absolutely nothing.

In the New Testament you don't have people praying to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, or any created being.

It sure seems that Roman Catholics have a very low expectation that God will hear and answer their prayers.

In other words, given what I wrote above, if the Rosary is some demonic devotion disguised and designed by Satan himself, he sure did screw it up.

You may want to re-think that.

Notice your comment....if I neglect my time with Mary and God.

One of the errors of the Israelis in the OT is they mixed in a little error with their worship of God.

The Rosary, with its repetitive prayer and overwhelming emphasis on prayer TO Mary is not Scriptural. Is some scripture in the prayer? Yes...but so is false teaching.

If Satan can get you, or anyone else, praying to, worshipping a created being as Roman Catholics do with Mary....then he's accomplished his objective.

When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray...what did He teach them?

Our Father who art in Heaven and your "mother" Mary....?

NO!

The prayer, as all prayers should be, are directed to the Creator.

You see...when you get away from scripture as your ultimate source of truth, you open yourself up to error.

Even a Samaritan can inherit eternal life when he is good.

  • And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
  • He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?
  • And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
  • And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
  • But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?
  • And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.
  • And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
  • And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.
  • But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,
  • And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
  • And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.
  • Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?
  • And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
