Am I the only one who finds it ironically amusing that this article was written by an official of the Catholic church?

The lavender mafia doesn’t run everything among Roman Catholics ... at least yet.

It's not ironic. The fact of the sex abuse problems in the Catholic Church does not implicate all priests or all Catholics, many of whom are appalled by what happened.

"Ironically amusing" that this article was written by Msgr. Charles Pope, who is an official (a priest) of the Catholic Church?
How about "excellent, and entirely to be expected."
"Excellent" because it is in line with the teaching of the Catholic Church for two millennia, and to the present day.
"To be expected" because this man, Charles Pope,is well known to Free Republic Religion Forum readers as one who walks the walk as well as talks the talk.

I’m not a Catholic, but pastors from every denomination have engaged in the sin of homosexuality and pedophilia, including cover-ups. And what the Priest is saying is true. The fact that he’s Catholic does not change that.

Because some priests are evil and do wicked things, no priests are allowed to preach the truth?
It's logically fallacious to reject moral advice given by a hypocrite; if the world's greatest thief tells you not to steal, you cannot conclude that stealing is okay.
You can't even claim that the Monsignor is a hypocrite; you're merely engaging in false generalization, attaching blame to someone because of evil things done by other individuals who may have nothing in common with the Monsignor except the priesthood.

Chastity and homosexuality
2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity,141 tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered."142 They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.
2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God's will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord's Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.
2359 Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection.
