Even Never Trump Evangelicals Might Be Swayed by the Supreme Court
The Atlantic ^ | July 15, 2018 | Emma Green

Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination is the consummation of one of the big bets behind the 2016 election. Many white Christians voted for Donald Trump because they believed he would appoint conservative justices who would protect religious liberty and advance the pro-life cause. Now, ostensibly, they’ve been vindicated. With less than two years in office, Trump will very possibly see the confirmation of his second Supreme Court nominee, another handpicked choice of the conservative legal establishment.

At the time, however, it wasn’t at all clear how this bet would play out. Particularly in the evangelical world, the divisions over the 2016 election were bitter. A number of prominent leaders stepped out to urge their fellow Christians to consider what their vote would say to the world. Two years later, their largely positive reaction to Kavanaugh’s nomination is one sign that the intense political fractures in the evangelical world are fading—at least on the surface, and at least for now.

“I’ve never seen the SBC this unified,” said one of these leaders—Russell Moore, the head of the political arm of the Southern Baptist Convention—in an interview on Wednesday. That unity has emerged in personal relationships and attitudes, he said, but it also seems to be the case in politics. Eighteen months into the Trump era, evangelical leaders are looking for ways to come together under this administration, even if existential questions about the future of the evangelical movement remain.

When Kavanaugh’s nomination was announced, Moore’s office—the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, or ERLC—put out a jubilant statement. “Supreme Court nominations are a crucial aspect of any president’s legacy,” it read....

So there are idiots in the media who think President Trump won't seat another justice after Gorsuch?

Pray for President Trump and for the Senate to approve Kavanaugh.

**“Supreme Court nominations are a crucial aspect of any president’s legacy,” it read. “With Judge Kavanaugh, President Trump has an opportunity to shape the direction of the Supreme Court for a generation or more.” On Wednesday, Moore told me he was “very happy” with the pick: “[Kavanaugh] is a thought leader,” Moore said, “not just someone who’s parroting slogans.”**

Trump is keeping his promises.

Why is there no derision towards Democrat presidents picking judges who are hand picked by liberal interest groups? If the issue here is a president picking judges from some list or using certain criteria, there’s plenty of criticism that can go to Clinton and Obama in that regard.

The only people who use the term “evangelical” are lamestreamers and pollsters.

As a definite Trump Evangelical, I have to tell you — I have never yet met a Never Trump Christian...not one. I keep hearing they are out there, but I’ve never met one.

The article has me wondering how many never trumpers, if any, were evangelicals who didn’t think Trump measured up.

My impression is that most never trumpers were uniparty Rino’s, or sour grapes voters because their chosen candidate didn’t win.

But to the extent that never trumpers existed on purely conservative considerations, I would think they would be fully won over by now.

I think there were Never Trump Evangelicals during the campaign. They were honestly for Ted Cruz for the most part. Any "Evangelical" today who opposes President Trump is either a phony, or so misguided it is a tragedy. The love Trump has for Israel should be the deal maker.

The media especially the Atlantic obviously doesn’t know what an Evangelical really is....A BORN AGAIN CHRISTIAN!!!

Many evengelicals, as far as the media is concerned could be Catholics or Presbyterians et el....but those particular demographics don’t contain many BORN AGAIN Believers

“At the time, however, it wasn’t at all clear how this bet would play out“

At the time it was clear for those with eyes to see and who put truth over prejudice and insecurity.

Our little chapel (20-30) has become 100% behind Trump because of his actions. We were mainly R and few conservative D Those who wavered at the beginning are the first to praise God for blessing America with this leader.

When these people refer to “ evangelicals” they are referring to the PC (USA) or the ELCA. Both denominations left the Christian camp years ago.

If Russell Moore is happy, I’m worried. The guy is a weasel. If weasels will forgive the insult.

I was both ALC and LCA based on the nearby church where we lived (we moved a lot). They were pretty standard-brand conservative denominations back then. BTW I was adopted through Lutheran Social Services as an infant. In 8th grade I attended a Missouri Synod parochial school and I noticed they were even more conservative.

I’m sure there are a few stragglers but for the most part anyone not supporting Trump that claims to be Republican or conservative was just lying. Most of those guys go to the same cocktail parties as the most liberal Democrats and just play act once in awhile for the cameras.
