STANBUL (Reuters) - President Tayyip Erdogan said the United States should look at its own actions if it wants the return of an American Christian pastor who has been jailed in Turkey for suspected links to a 2016 failed coup.
Erdogan made the comment in a live interview with broadcaster NTV.
Andrew Brunson, who has lived in Turkey for more than two decades, was indicted on charges of helping the group that Ankara holds responsible for the failed coup against Erdogan. He faces up to 35 years in prison. Brunson denies the charges.

Erdogan is vile.
Holding an American hostage. Holding Greek soldiers hostage.
Trying to use them for an exchange.
Turkey does not belong in nato.
He’s just a Turkish pirate holding an American for ransom.
Erdogan is vile, an elected and authoritarian ruler.
So is Maduro in Venezuela.
And then there’s a country where people are arrested, fined and even jailed for expressing their opinions.
Some arrested are Christians expressing their views about homosexuality.
They are punished at “hate criminals” and busted by “hate crimes” units of police.
And then that same country takes children away from parents in hospitals and puts them to death determining they wouldn’t be able to survive or that other medical treatment available would work.
The country that killed Charlie Gard last year and Alfie Evans this week also elects its leaders.
Prime Minister Theresa May has some of Erdogan in her, too.
So he admits that he’s holding Brunson hostage.
Erdogan is a common kidnapper. He needs to be dealt with.
I think that it is high time for President Trump to make a choice: free his American hostage or be booted from NATO.
Our NATO Ally. An attack on Turkey is to be considered the same as an attack on our country. Washington warned about getting involved in entangling foreign alliances.
You are absolutely correct. Washington also warned of political parties.
A couple of A-10s flying low into Ankara should do the job.
This country, this idiot, does not deserve membership in NATO. It’s usefulness ended when Erdogan took power.
I question why Turkey is even in NATO to begin with.
