Good point for a specific application, yet even in that case “so that I could” can be replaced succinctly by “to”.
That is correct usage for “so”. So, what does that have to do with the usage as an interjection at the beginning of a sentence? :=)

I believe the author is picking on the word ‘so’ as it is ‘so’ overused, that it’s ‘so’ fricking unbelievable.
It’s like someone going ‘uh’ or ‘like’ as they speak. It’s a verbal stammer.
