Notwithstanding the lack of clarity around Truth in the current pontificate, any attempt on Pope Francis' life should be treated as an attack on Christianity.....they didn't target the WTC because they disliked the architecture of Minoru Yamasaki, after all.

As for the Guards, they may look soft and squishy but looks are deceiving. I encourage all to check out this article about the Guns of the Vatican’s Swiss Guard. For example, in addition to carrying handguns (complete with Vatican insignias)
