Venezuelan Bishops Pray to Virgin Mary to Free the Country from the ‘Claws of Communism’

The Venezuelan Episcopal Conference (CEV) has publicly invoked the intercession of the Virgin Mary to free the nation “from the claws of communism,” in a clear reference to the regime of President Nicolás Maduro.

“Blessed Virgin, Mother of Coromoto, heavenly Patron of Venezuela, free our country from the claws of communism and socialism,” the CEV posted on Twitter this Sunday, complete with an image of Santa Maria and a Venezuelan flag.

Let’s go back to the Luke 11 passage. Jesus corrected the woman’s attempt to venerate Mary because it took the focus off Jesus, His words, and the necessity of obedience to Him/His teachings.

How much more does a preoccupation with Luther distract us? How can we focus clearly and solely on Jesus if we are busy envisioning how Jesus would interact with someone else? How is this in keeping with the Luke 11 message?

Here’s a reiteration of that message. Do you see the common thread?

John 21:20-22. New American Standard Bible (NASB)

20 Peter, turning around, *saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had leaned back on His bosom at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?”

21 So Peter seeing him *said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?”

22 Jesus *said to him, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!”

Not as much as detractions of the Blessed Mother distract us.

I advise you to reread the title of this thread and then ask youself why so many prots are on it, if they don't have a certain animosity towards Christ's Mother.

YES!!

And Bathsheba, Ruth, and Tamar!

Still, some say the Matthew genealogy is His legal lineage through Joseph, who was His foster-father, and not his genetic lineage, which was through Mary's line as recorded in Luke.

I really don't know how to resolve the two-genealogy question, but in any case I do appreciate the mention of Rahab! So cool.

‘why so many prots are on it, if they don’t have a certain animosity towards Christ’s Mother.’

This is assigning motives, a very unhealthy practice from an emotional/psychological POV. Since I am an Evangelical, I may not be one of the people to whom you are assigning such motives. Nevertheless, I’ll tell you why I’m here: to seek and share the truth.

Why?

Because of love/agape. If you love someone you want them to have the truth. And if anyone claims to be a Christian but doesn’t love others, they are proceeding toward unmitigated disaster.

OK. I suppose some mind-reading is involved in empathy.

We’re even told to have within us the mind of Christ. I pray for that every day.

Anyhow, it’s bedtime for the mind reader now. Goodnight, Elsie, and peace.

It was a sign that showed His glory as Messiah and a sign to His disciples, who then “believed in Him.”

Which disciples were in attendance at the Wedding of Cana?

You will find them named in John chapter 1. Presumably, they are the disciples who believed.

All the disciples were at the wedding:

John2:

1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and mother of Jesus was there;

2 and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.

11 This beginning of [His] signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

John 2: 1, 2 - “On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.”

But you were the one who knew that the reason for the wedding-wine miracle was recorded in Scripture. I had forgotten all about John 2:11.

Thanks for that reminder.

I find that familiar passages are easy to gloss over, missing what is there.

Sometimes we need to slow down and examine what is actually there, who is there, what is said and done, what comes before and after, how it fits into the rubbric of the book, etc. study to show ourselves approved as a *workman* ...

I’ve often reread a passage I’ve read more than a dozen times and discover something new appeared!

In this regard, in Genesis when Eve eats the apple, it is easy to miss that Adam was standing next to her.

Thanks. I stand corrected.

But who was it who instructed the waiters, “ Whatsoever he shall say to you, do ye”?

Here we see complete strangers obey the Blessed Mother.

Agree! God’s word is a goldmine. No matter how many rich veins we’ve followed, there’s always a fresh nugget waiting to be discovered and cherished.

“Here we see complete strangers obey the Blessed Mother.

:-)

Or they obeyed because as servants they were supposed to obey.

Or they didn’t “obey” Mary, but their cooperation is characterized by you as obedience.

Or they decided on their own recognizance that it was their only option.

Or they looked to Christ and God moved them to obey Him.

So much we do not know.

Or they obeyed because as servants they were supposed to obey.

Both Mary and Her Son were only invited guests to the wedding. The servants, in their servile duties, had no obligation to obey either of them.

Again, who was it who told (not asked) the waiters to do what He says?

The situation isn’t hard to figure out. There is no wine at the wedding which would be an embarrassing situation for the hosts. The servants hear someone tell them there is a solution. They acted out of desperation.....not obedience.

Neither the chief steward nor the bridegroom were aware of Mary’s order to the waiters and the subsequent miracle.
