"Catholics Will Have to Decide Whether They Guard the Faith Over Papolatry"
Gloria TV ^ | July 17, 2017 | Gloria TV

“Francis is more interested in leftwing politics than in Catholic theology”, George Neumayr, contributing editor of The American Spectator, states talking to Tom Woods on July 14th on tomwoods.com. Woods describes Francis as a result of John Paul II who - as he puts it - appointed "absolutely terrible people" as bishops: "Catholics have suffered under Bergoglios for decades now”.

Neumayr agrees that a lot of the liberal bishops were appointed by John Paul II and Benedict XVI. He sees Francis as the “culmination of a century” of liberalism and modernism in the Church.

For him it is "highly unlikely" that Francis, who in his theology is “more a Protestant than a Catholic” will convert to Catholicism. Instead, the realistic scenario is that Francis will produce division and chaos, "Catholics will have to decide whether they guard the faith over papolatry.”

And: “The Cardinals have to declare that Francis is a bad pope who must be resisted.”

Oh yes, I forgot to mention, it is nice to have total, complete, 💯% assurance of salvation. If that makes some people freak out, that is their problem, not mine. They should try it, they will like it.

Protestant attempts to take the words of Paul in isolation to support "faith alone" are examples of forcing Scripture to support the man-made traditions of Martin Luther and the other Reformers rather than relying on Scripture itself.

Catholics to take the words of hundreds of Early Church Fathers to support "Tradition; too!" are examples of forcing Scripture to support the man-made traditions of Rome; rather than relying on the Instruction Book Rome assembled so long ago: Scripture itself.

If I were to take some math class in school; and told which text we'd be studying from; I'd expect that there'd be NOTHING taught in the class that was NOT found in the book!

Praying for the dead would not be inconsistent with NT.

oh?

It's appointed unto men once to die. After this; the Judgement.
Hebrews 9:27

Luke 16:19-31   (NIV)

19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’

25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’

29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’

30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’

31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

So; pray all ya want; but from what I see in Scripture; it will  not do any good.

I know you would not totally accept those ECF writings since you come from a sola scriptura perspective, however, it does indicate what was a common practice in the Church well before the NT canon was finally settled in the late 4th century.

Bah!

Catholics don't even 'totally accept' ECF writings!!!

As regards the oft-quoted Mt. 16:18, note the following Early Church Fathers promise in the profession of faith of Vatican 1:

 • Basil of Seleucia, Oratio 25:

'You are Christ, Son of the living God.'...Now Christ called this confession a rock, and he named the one who confessed it 'Peter,' perceiving the appellation which was suitable to the author of this confession. For this is the solemn rock of religion, this the basis of salvation, this the wall of faith and the foundation of truth: 'For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Christ Jesus.' To whom be glory and power forever. — Oratio XXV.4, M.P.G., Vol. 85, Col. 296-297.

Bede, Matthaei Evangelium Expositio, 3:

You are Peter and on this rock from which you have taken your name, that is, on myself, I will build my Church, upon that perfection of faith which you confessed I will build my Church by whose society of confession should anyone deviate although in himself he seems to do great things he does not belong to the building of my Church...Metaphorically it is said to him on this rock, that is, the Saviour which you confessed, the Church is to be built, who granted participation to the faithful confessor of his name. — 80Homily 23, M.P.L., Vol. 94, Col. 260. Cited by Karlfried Froehlich, Formen, Footnote #204, p. 156 [unable to verify by me].

Cassiodorus, Psalm 45.5:

'It will not be moved' is said about the Church to which alone that promise has been given: 'You are Peter and upon this rock I shall build my Church and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.' For the Church cannot be moved because it is known to have been founded on that most solid rock, namely, Christ the Lord. — Expositions in the Psalms, Volume 1; Volume 51, Psalm 45.5, p. 455

Chrysostom (John) [who affirmed Peter was a rock, but here not the rock in Mt. 16:18]:

Therefore He added this, 'And I say unto thee, Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church; that is, on the faith of his confession. — Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Saint Matthew, Homily LIIl; Philip Schaff, Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers (http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/npnf110.iii.LII.html)

Cyril of Alexandria:

When [Peter] wisely and blamelessly confessed his faith to Jesus saying, 'You are Christ, Son of the living God,' Jesus said to divine Peter: 'You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church.' Now by the word 'rock', Jesus indicated, I think, the immoveable faith of the disciple.”. — Cyril Commentary on Isaiah 4.2.

Origen, Commentary on the Gospel of Matthew (Book XII):

“For a rock is every disciple of Christ of whom those drank who drank of the spiritual rock which followed them, 1 Corinthians 10:4 and upon every such rock is built every word of the church, and the polity in accordance with it; for in each of the perfect, who have the combination of words and deeds and thoughts which fill up the blessedness, is the church built by God.'

“For all bear the surname ‘rock’ who are the imitators of Christ, that is, of the spiritual rock which followed those who are being saved, that they may drink from it the spiritual draught. But these bear the surname of rock just as Christ does. But also as members of Christ deriving their surname from Him they are called Christians, and from the rock, Peters.” — Commentary on the Gospel of Matthew (Book XII), sect. 10,11 ( http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/101612.htm)

Hilary of Potier, On the Trinity (Book II):

Thus our one immovable foundation, our one blissful rock of faith, is the confession from Peter's mouth, Thou art the Son of the living God. On it we can base an answer to every objection with which perverted ingenuity or embittered treachery may assail the truth."-- (Hilary of Potier, On the Trinity (Book II), para 23; Philip Schaff, editor, The Nicene & Post Nicene Fathers Series 2, Vol 9.

Well; Rome has recorded the COMMON PRACTICE of it's churches in the first three chapters of Revelation.

I'd hate to hang MY hat on ANY of them!!

Can you not see that Paul is using "works" with two different meanings?

'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in a rather scornful tone,
' it means just what I choose it to mean, neither more nor less.'

'The question is,' said Alice, 'whether you can make words mean so many different things.'

'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master - that's all.'

As can be seen from my continual postings of what ECFs taught, the MODERN Catholic is NOT bound to any of it.

Your additional posting here using the very words of ECFs will likely have as much effect as FR history has shown us.

“WE preach and teach EXACTLY as the Apostles did!” is a hollow; false claim from those who follow Rome slavishly.

“Why is it some people cannot understand that saying “immorality” can lose us our salvation is no different than saying “morality” gains us salvation???”

Well; we DO know from Scripture that we CAN lose it by UNBELIEF.

Hebrews 3:12
See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.

He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
Mark 16:16

Matthew 24:10-13

At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.

Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.

My old man was a strong Christian - prayed all the time. I think that he and his mom went to the Charasmatic tent meetings back in the day (he was born 1917). He prayed to God and Jesus, but I recall he “talked” to his parents as well. I have no idea whether that is Biblical or not - but I thought that was a bit goofy.

I did call him out on when he brought my mom to a charasmatic revival meeting. My mom didn’t like it, and he was sort of implying that she didn’t have enough faith.

So I asked him if they had an interpreter for the guys speaking in tongues. “An interpreter - it’s for the Holy Spirit - not for us.”

Then I pointed out what Paul had to say about speaking in tongues, and having an interpreter. My dad made some comment about “Hmm - I guess I’ll have to do some more Bible reading about that.” He didn’t try to get my mom to any more meetings though!

He raised the family Lutheran. After being diagnosed with a terminal diesase he partly went back to his charasmatic upbringing. His mother was an invalid for most of his life - so I’m guessing that she, and later he, was looking for a miracle of healing.

The day he died he told all of us - “Don’t be sad. I’ve always said the best day of my life will be the day I die - and get to wear the crown of glory in Heaven.”

I held his hand and said “That may be so dad - but it will sure suck for the rest of us.”

A few hours later he was gone.

My son and I were just having a conversation about heaven. He’s an adult with a very strong faith. “Yeah - I don’t know dad - what about bacon? There better be bacon in heaven - I’m not sure how that works with the Old Testament and the Jews and stuff - but how can heaven NOT have bacon!?”

I replied “Yeah - I hope there is bacon too. And I hope that we can still recognize and know our loved ones. But you know, whatever it will be like - it will be great. And the bacon - I’m guessing that if it isn’t in heaven - we probably won’t even notice! Although ...... it IS bacon!”

Yeah...

What is called the Counter-Reformation would probably have occurred anyway,

So; it seems there was a LOT of dissent within the 'church' on the direction it was going.

To single out and BLAME Luther is a bit over the top; Right?

This is IT???

Luke 1:26-56  New International Version (NIV)

The Birth of Jesus Foretold

26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[a] the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.”

38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

Mary Visits Elizabeth

39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

Mary’s Song

46 And Mary said:

“My soul glorifies the Lord
47     and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
49     for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
    holy is his name.
50 His mercy extends to those who fear him,
    from generation to generation.
51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things
but has sent the rich away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
    remembering to be merciful
55 to Abraham and his descendants forever,
just as he promised our ancestors.”

56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.
