Cardinal Schönborn Reviles Saint Pius V as an "Anti-Semite
There were anti-Semites in the Catholic Church including the canonized Pope Pius V (1504-1572), Vienna Cardinal Christoph Schönborn said on Friday during a discussion with Protestant bishop Michael Bünker in church Sankt Leopold in Vienna, "kathpress.at" reports.
According to "kathpress.at" Schönborn said: "On the Catholic side, too, there were great antisemites and persecutors of the Jews, including the canonized Pope Pius V."
Talking about the alleged dark side of the Church makes more cautious when judging Islam, Schönborn added. According to him Catholics live in a glass house and shouldnt throw stones.
So because Catholics mistreated Jews 500 years ago, Catholics should not speak truth to Islam, or stand for the truth of Scripture in matters of faith and doctrine, today?
I am fairly sure that most Catholics and other Christians in the 1500s were anti-semites. The point is that most are not anti-semites today, unlike the muslims. This guy is a moron.
The Marcion Heresy has never truly left the Church and exists in many Churches today. To say that it left 500 years ago is not correct. It rears its head in many churches, but is couched in replacement themes.
I think you have a problem with your religion.
I’ll continue to pray for you.
This is true, but Jews were rabidly anti-Christian/gentile as well. The ancients did not hate people for no apparent reason. They were not ignorant hicks. Even the Greeks and Romans had the same reactions. The Rabbi's Talmud with its strange fantasies of "Jesus" boiling in "semen" (it goes to how twisted the Talmud is that it would even imagine a boiling pot of semen to begin with), passages that justified all manner of crimes against Gentiles, prayers in their synagogues, and their practices as merchants and money lenders, raised a huge amount of ire against them. Islam learned a lot from the Pharisee's Rabbanical teachings.
It just isn't politically correct to mention this. We're just supposed to let people tell us that all our ancient church fathers, Popes (if you're Catholic), Protestant Reformers and ministers, were just plain evil people who held prejudices for no good reason whatsoever.
There was also that stuff about siding with the Moors during the Islamic occupation of Spain, where they subsequently ended up not being trusted by either side.
Say, wasn’t it Schönborn’s country which voluntarily joined the Third Reich in 1938? Obviously this makes any pronouncements of his highly suspect.
Well yes, st pics V was a terrible anti- Semite ( forcing Jewish people to wear the yellow badge even inside the ghetto not just when they forayed out, prescribing that any Jew caught outside the ghetto at night was to be murdered, forbidding study of much of their religious tradition, and much more). The lesson we must learn is not how bad Prius V was, that’s a matter of history anyway the lessons are that he was far from the only “Christian” persecutor or murderer of innocent Jewish people ————it’s been a longstanding problem -— and second-— that just because the church has finally begun trying to stove and correct its bloody history Agaibt the Jews does NOT NIT NOT mean the church should do likewise and accept the Islamic “religion” too. There’s a world of difference and it shouldn’t take a church priest or theologian to tell light from dark, good from Satanic evil. In other words, the article’s conclusion definitely does not flow from its premise. No way !! May the good Lord help the Church leadership find discernment
Pius V’s failings were offset by his ability to keep the Holy League together. The Turks’ defeat at Lepanto prevented them from dominating the entire Mediterranean.
Think bad about our triune god? Burn him!
Makes sense.
It's a sin to lie and defame Catholic saints.
I believe at least some of faithhopecharity's accusations may apply to Paul IV, St. Pius V's predecessor once-removed. We may note that it's Paul IV, not St. Paul IV.
Yes. I believe I may have accidentally gotten pope pius V mixed up with pope pius VI. New may be culpa. My reference was to pius VI’s Edict over the Hebrew —1775 called Editto sopra gli ebrei, “Edict over the Hebrew.” you can find not only the few items I mentioned but actually a full 24 clauses in that anti- Semitic edict Here though is pope pius V’s opening paragraph when he expelled Jewish residents from most of the then- Papsl states. (Note: He also encouraged neighboring states to force Jewish people into ghettos - which ensued/ happened in several of them). The Bull Hebraeorum gens (”The Jewish Race”) 1569, of Saint Pius V, which expelled Jews from some of the Papal states, began with these words:
“The Jewish people fell from the heights because of their faithlessness and condemned their Redeemer to a shameful death. Their godlessness has assumed such forms that, for the salvation of our own people, it becomes necessary to prevent their disease. Besides usury, through which Jews everywhere have sucked dry the property of impoverished Christians, they are accomplices of thieves and robbers; and the most damaging aspect of the matter is that they allure the unsuspecting through magical incantations, superstition, and witchcraft to the Synagogue of Satan and boast of being able to predict the future. We have carefully investigated how this revolting sect abuses the name of Christ and how harmful they are to those whose life is threatened by their deceit. On account of these and other serious matters, and because of the gravity of their crimes which increase day to day more and more, We order that, within 90 days, all Jews in our entire earthly realm of justice — in all towns, districts, and places — must depart these regions.”

Profanity has no place in a religious discussion.
Close. And thanks. My first citation was mistakenly about pius 6 not pius 5. I just posted a note correcting that and it includes a horribly anti- Semitic quote from pius V when he expelled Jewish residents from most of the Papal States, please kindly scroll to that note. Thanks. Also in re your mention of Paul 4, he also like pius v and pius Vi had a seriously bad anti- semitism problem. a: in his bull “Cum nimis absurdum” (July 12, 1555),
Paul 4 renewed all canonical restrictions against the Jewsas those prohibiting their practising medicine for Christian patients needing care, employing Christian servants, and the likeand he restricted them in commerce, forbade them to have more than one synagogue in any city, enforced the wearing of the yellow hat, ordered that no Jew could be addressed as “signor,” and decreed that they should live in a ghetto. The last measure was carried out in Rome — which became the infamous Roman Ghetto of historical record.
