Astonishing Discovery at Christ's Tomb Supports Turin Shroud
EWTN Great Britain ^ | 11/26/16 | Deacon Nick Donnelly

An astonishing discovery has been made during repair work to the Edicule -- the ancient chamber housing Jesus' tomb in Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Scientists have reported extraordinary phemonena that may support the authenticity of the Holy Shroud of Turin.

On October 26, 27 and 28, 2016 a group of scientists and religious authorities oversaw the removal of the marble slab that covers the tomb of Christ. Marie-Armelle Beaulieu, editor-in-chief of Terre Sainte Magazine, reports that some of the measuring instruments used by scientists were altered by electromagnetic disturbances when they were placed directly on the stone in which Christ’s body rested. The scientists reports that their measuring devices either malfunctioned or ceased to work at all. Aleteia reports:

The phenomenon was confirmed by one of the scientists authorized to access the tomb. Later, one of the heads of the building and construction team, Antonia Moropoulou, indicated that it is really hard to imagine that someone would be willing to put in danger his or her reputation just because of a “publicity stunt.” Moreover, the journalist testifies to the scientists’ surprise during the opening of the slab: they hoped that the grave would be much lower than it was. Their conclusion: previously performed analyses with the instruments seemed to have been distorted by an electromagnetic disturbance.

The observation of unusual electromagnetic disturbances at the tomb of Our Lord may support a scientific hypothesis proposed to explain the creation of the mysterious image on the Holy Shroud of Turin. After five years of study and experiments scientists at Italy's National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development [ENEA] concluded that the Shroud of Turin cannot be a 'medieval fake'.

Another "astonishing" discovery?

It USED to start with "British science" has made an astonishing discovery...

The more science tries to prove there is no God, the more they prove there is.

Faith is the evidence of things unseen.

Faithless folk need “proof” and signs and miracles.

We are surrounded by the creative works of God every day. And yet we want a sign.

The ENEA study of the Holy Shroud of Turin concluded that it would take 34 Thousand Billion Watts of VUV radiations to make the image on the shroud. (the most powerful available (VUV light source) on the market come to several billion watts )”.

Interesting.

The observation of unusual electromagnetic disturbances at the tomb of Our Lord may support a scientific hypothesis proposed to explain the creation of the mysterious image on the Holy Shroud of Turin.

That is a laughable conclusion, akin to "My magnetic compass once twitched a little near the pyramids. Astronauts observed magnetic phenomenon on the surface of the Moon. Hence: 'Moon-Men' built the pyramids."

That’s the trouble with miracles. No one will believe what one saw, and later one will even start to doubt one’s own eyes.

Scripture clearly says that Jesus face was wrapped with a separate napkin which Peter saw deliberately folded beside where the Lord lay.

Wasn’t The Shroud of Turin carbon-dated to post-date the death of Christ by many hundreds of years?

There's a difference between...."this data supports or is consistent with Hypotheis A" and ..."this data proves Hypothesis A". The former makes no claims of proof while the latter rules out all other possible hypotheses.

Since the article uses the phrase "may support...", it's making the first of the above statements, not the second.

I don't see a problem.

That's assuming that the image was made by VUV radiation. That has not yet been established, so the statement is misleading (as well as being nonsensical on the face of it - watts are units of power, not energy, and it is not stated for what duration that power would have to be applied.)

No, the sample taken for that test was from some newer material used to patch up where there had been some fire damage.

What they have found on the shroud are pollen grains from a thorny flowering plant that grows around Jerusalem.

No kidding. I do not require proof that the shroud is real to sustain my faith. I really do however have no doubt, that the image was created by God at the exact moment of Christ’s resurrection. The article goes on to say, that that amount of energy is beyond our ability to recreate. God is truly wonderful.

Yes. And I find it most interesting that our modern scientists are still struggling to explain how the image got there. Even in this modern era they do not have the tools to even try and replicate it.

That napkin is now known as the ‘Sudarium of Olviedo’.

The marks on the Sudarium match the marks on the facial part of the Shroud in exact detail.

I just discovered that my uncle likes to eat corn. The ancient Aztecs also ate corn. I make no claim of proof, mind you, but: This supports my hypothesis that my uncle is, in fact, an ancient Aztec.

You see, the new data I have uncovered (about my uncle) is not inconsistent with the established fact (that the Aztecs ate corn).

Of course, in this example, it's obvious that the assertion is ludicrous. But that's only because we are very familiar with the ancient Aztecs and living relatives. But substitute something more mysterious-sounding for the corn, like "stochastic alpha waves" or "enlarged cranial foramen," and (for laypersons) it starts getting more difficult to disbelieve in it (especially if they're predisposed to believe it anyway).
