Alexandria, La., Sep 21, 2016 / 11:46 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The Vatican announced Wednesday that Pope Francis has appointed Bishop David Prescott Talley, currently auxiliary bishop of Atlanta and a former Baptist, to serve as the coadjutor bishop of the Diocese of Alexandria.

As coadjutor, Bishop Talley possesses the right of succession as head of the Diocese of Alexandria upon the resignation of its current ordinary, Bishop Ronald Herzog. Bishop Herzog will celebrate his 75th birthday – 'mandatory retirement' age for bishops – on April 22, 2017.

Archbishop Wilton Gregory of Atlanta said Sept. 21 that Bishop Talley “is a servant minister of our Church, who is graced with extraordinary wisdom, patience, kindness and dedication.”

The bishop, he said, “developed these gifts as a priest and bishop here in the Archdiocese of Atlanta, where he always cared for our people as a true minister of mercy and kindness. Thus, he now begins this new appointment with exceptional credentials.”

Serving as an auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Atlanta since 2012, Bishop Talley, 66, was the first native-born Georgian to serve the Archdiocese of Atlanta as a bishop.

Born in Columbus, Georgia, Sept. 11, 1950, he was raised as a Southern Baptist, but left that ecclesial community as a teenager over the issue of racial segregation, he said. He then joined the Catholic Church when he was 24, after meeting Catholics and reading the writings of Thomas Merton while he was studying at Auburn University.

He was ordained a priest of the Atlanta archdiocese June 3, 1989, and earned a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian University. He has served as pastor at three Atlanta area parishes, as the archdiocesan vocations director, as chancellor of the archdiocese, and as judicial vicar of the metropolitan tribunal. He was made a........

It is my choice. Do you concede that no one here can mention their upbringing in the Catholic Church, and subsequent separation from the Catholic Church without being inflammatory ?

Telling us somebody is “Baptist” tells us nothing. The Westburros say that they are “Baptist.” The preacher at the Baptist church I currently worship at on Sundays, used to be a Catholic... so does this cancel it out?

Lots of us ex Catholics out here. 😇😎☝️️
We just want to stay out of Hell. 🔥

In the end, Christ knows those who are His. And it’s the very thesis of the Protestant movement that it isn’t “doctrines” that got them that way, but a direct personal acceptance of the Lord.

You are correct sir. He knows who are His. Well said.

Please see the entry under "rnmomof7", THAT'S why they're not posted. They used to be, constantly.

You'd be hard pressed to find anything wrong with rnmomof7's posts.

She posted the truth and in doing so got some Catholics really mad at her and they complained over and over about her and a couple of other good solid Christians. So she and a couple of others were banned.

She and others posted threads critical of Catholicism to counter the almost daily posting of threads that bashed Protestants and other born again Christians.

It seems that management wished to appease the Catholics here for some reason.

The squeaky wheel got greased.

Did you ever read rnmonof7's testimony on her FR page? It isn't accessible any more as she is banned.

It' s the kind of thing that brings tears of joy to any born again Christian who reads it.

I saved it because it so strikingly showed the power of Jesus to touch a genuinely seeking person.

Oh and PS: kind of a low blow to badmouth her when she cannot reply.

People need to remember who the boss is.

Notice: The daily sport of posting Catholic bashing threads on FR stops today. Thanks.

I met Jesus in a psychiatrist’s office,

I met Jesus on a mountain top, at Bogus Basin ski resort, Boise, Idaho. I was in the USAF at the time.

:-)

==================================

Scott Hahn and Steve Ray, both former Protestant ministers, converted to Catholicism and the appear on EWTN, the Catholic television network, (founded by a nun called Sister Angelica) and tell their stories. Very interesting.

Steve Ray wrote a book called Crossing The Tiber and he and his wife, Janet, lead tours to the Holy Land a few times a year. The tour is called "In the Footsteps of God." The tour followed Jesus' steps in His preaching. I can still remember standing on the spot where the TRANSFORMATION of Jesus took place. It's high up, looking down over a long dry valley, with a cool breeze and wonderful vista.
I got to place my already blessed rosary ON JESUS' TOMB. Since the Romans had Mt. Calvary taken down (4th century), the site of the Crucifixion is quite close to His tomb.
My Protestant friend and I went on that tour a few years ago and it was WONDERFUL. We both enjoyed it.

It's a tour EVERY Christian OUGHT to take. It's worth every penny.

ots of us ex Catholics out here. 😇😎☝️️ ***We just want to stay out of Hell. 🔥>

***Don't we all?
Those ten commandments are just THAT, commandments, not "suggestions."
I think that the real sticking point for many Westerners, Americans, that is, is THE DIVORCE-REMARRIAGE, which is a no-no.

Of course, ONE solution is simply to decide NOT to be Catholic anymore, as Protestants can marry-divorce-remarry, divorce-remarry, divorce-remarry, divorce-remarry, divorce-remarry, etc. a la Henry VIII or Liz Taylor.

THEN the Catholic bashing can proceed. I feel very sorry for those folks who have discarded the "faith of our fathers." With the anger, resentment and guilt, it can't be an easy way to live.
I know that my daily Mass and Communion are MOST helpful keeping me on the strait and narrow. I do try and even succeed once in a while. :o)

So you are turning me in?

People need to remember who the boss is.
What an absurd and insulting thing to post to me.

I'm often astounding at how some posters choose to bother The Boss by pinging him for petty self serving reasons.

Catholics and non-Catholics are being treated equally now IMO.

I will stick up for my born again Christian friends when they are badmouthed on an open forum as one was up thread.

Oh and BTW I have NEVER posted a Catholic bashing thread.

So posting that link to me is ludicrous and I take it as a personal attack. I won't turn you in though.

Isn’t it always polite to list someone who has authored a thread if you post it. I was just trying to be polite.

Sorry if I offended you.

"THEN the Catholic bashing can proceed."

Huh?

You baiting the Christians here?

Just because you chose to bash Protestants with your post doesn't mean that non Catholics will bash Catholics.

ONE solution is simply to decide NOT to be Catholic anymore, as Protestants can marry-divorce-remarry, divorce-remarry, divorce-remarry, divorce-remarry, divorce-remarry, etc. a la Henry VIII or Liz Taylor.
Wasn't Taylor a Catholic?

No ... this is not an election nor a court of law

I commented on the wording an idiot writer used ... and I believe he used those words that way to excite people like you to chase rabbits all over the place.

The bishop didn't choose those words (and I venture the intelligent guess he would never THINK of referring to himself as a former Baptist, just as I never refer to myself as a former Catholic)

I don’t buy that.

I was not offended, I was indignant.

I do try and even succeed once in a while. :o)

Of course, we all try to stay on the straight and narrow, and lead spirit filled lives. I just don't think keeping the 10 commandments, will keep anyone out of Hell. 🔥 God requires 100% perfection. Since I don't know anyone who is 100% perfect, we will have to do it some other way.
I realized that on that mountain top, at Bogus Basin ski resort, Boise, Idaho.
Look, people can believe whatever they want to, but, as Hi Tech says, ultimately, God knows who belongs to Him. 😇🙏

I agree! I miss RnMomof7 and got real upset when she was banned. She did NOT deserve it as NONE of her threads were personally attacking or bashing anyone.

Gotta keep that well worn "Catholic bashing" card ready all the time, right? Here's what the "Boss" said:

That's not the purpose of FR and not the purpose of our Religion forum. Trashing religion is not debate.

I'd be real nice if some FRoman Catholics would remember that.

I met Jesus in a Southern Baptist Sunday school when the leader gave me a Bible and showed me John 10:27-30. I praise Him every day for His grace, mercy and love.

And if that's not social justice, I don't know what is!
