Pope Francis to Catholics: ‘Who are you to judge others?’
Religion News ^ | June 20, 2016 | Rosie Scammell

VATICAN CITY (RNS) Stop being judgmental hypocrites and take a look at yourself in the mirror — without covering up your wrinkles — Pope Francis advised Catholics in a sermon that reprised one of his favorite themes.

In his last homily at morning Mass before taking a break for the summer, Francis on Monday (June 20) said those who constantly judge people should instead reflect on their own behavior.

“Look in the mirror, but not to put on makeup to hide the wrinkles. No, no, no, that’s not the advice! Look in the mirror to look at yourself as you are,” the pope said, in a report by Vatican Radio.

“How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while the log is still in your eye?” he continued. “And how does the Lord look at us then, when we do this? One word: ‘hypocrite.’ First take the log out of your eye, and then you shall see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.'”

Vatican Radio usually has a reporter present at the pontiff’s daily morning Mass in the small chapel at the Vatican guest house where Francis lives. The pope will continue to celebrate Mass daily as usual, but without coverage of his remarks.

In this latest homily, the pope said those who are overly critical of others rather than looking at themselves are viewed as hypocrites by the Lord, and should not try and take God’s place:

“Being judgmental is very ugly. Judgment belongs only to God, to Him alone!”

The pontiff instead urged his followers to focus on love, understanding and mercy — the latter being the theme of the Catholic Church’s current Holy Year jubilee.

His comments continue a central theme of his papacy, during which Francis has promoted a pastoral approach to Catholicism rather than the unforgiving imposition of canon law.

While such an approach has been widely praised, the pope has also been accused by traditionalists of trying to water down church doctrine.

Francis is famous — and controversial, to some — for once saying, in reply to a question on whether gay men could become priests, “Who am I to judge?”

>>“What gives you the authority to sit in judgment on your church leaders?”

The Truth.

2 Thess 2:10-12
They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12 and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.

“Other than the Crusades in which the Catholic popes got it right for once, and fought actual enemies of Christianity...”

Well, sometimes they got it right. Don’t forget the Crusaders also sacked Venice and Constantinople which were Christian cities. Also, they frequently ended up just slaughtering local Jews instead of making the long trek out of Europe.

Other than the Crusades in which the Catholic popes got it right for once, and fought actual enemies of Christianity, most false judgment has fallen on innocent Protestant believers who were not a threat to Catholic people or lands...

But the whole motive for the Crusades was different.

That was a right response to a serious threat.

Jesuit casuistry in action - from the Father of Lies mouth to the Pope’s ears.

If you don’t learn to judge others, you don’t learn from their mistakes and you don’t protect yourself from mishap. Used to think the same way the Pope directs and then realized that you don’t grow as a human being if you don’t have good judgement. If you are not judgemental, you would open all the prisons and let those that were judged to be a danger to us out into society.

Everything we do and say is based on making judgments about it. We simply cannot get away from judging.

The question then becomes what the purpose of the judging is.

When someone asks me a question where the obvious answer is no, my sarcastic response is "Is the Pope Catholic?"

Why not, the President isn't American.

Judging people ... I agree. Judging sin ... well, aren’t we called to do that? To call out our brothers and sisters when they err? We need to hold each other accountable. Otherwise, sinful behavior gets watered down.

Has this misguided, worldly Pope never read the entire Matthew 7:1-6 passage, particularly verse 5?

I also question if the Pope is familiar with 1 Corinthians 5:12 and 1 Corinthians 6:1-6.

Most of the Bible is a textbook instructing Christians how to judge others.

But this is the pope. My Catholic friends tell me the Bible isn’t important in relation to what a fallible man in an unfashionable hat decrees. So if you’ve got that going for you, i.e., blind obedience by church members, you can say/do anything. It’s good to be pope.

Yes we are, but not for the reasons that we usually do it.

It's usually to point fingers in judgment and condemnation and tear down, not realizing that within each one of us doing the finger pointing is the potential do engage in the same sin we are condemning in others.

We're all human and there is no temptation but what is common to man.

EVERY. LAST. ONE. OF. US.

It's just a matter of circumstances and opportunities that we choose different paths, but that is nothing to brag on.

I look back at situations in my life where I could have really gone off the rails and ruined my life and I can now see that God was working in my life to protect me from myself for not letting those situations go where they could have.

His rhetoric is dangerous.
True, we can’t judge what is in someone’s heart, only God can do that.
But we can, and must, judge what is in their hands (a sword), their body (a bomb) or their laws (Sharia).
In Matthew 10:16 it is said: “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.
We cannot put our heads in the sand and ignore the threats against us.
It is our duty to help those that cannot help themselves, like those being persecuted by the Mohammedans.

‘He was quick to judge Trump though, and quick to judge about protecting our borders.’

Perhaps you’re missing the nuance here? Francis didn’t say, ‘Fellow Catholics, who ate WE to judge?’

He said, ‘Catholics, who are YOU to judge?’

A not so subtle distinction, at least in terms of POV. (Kind of reminds me of Obama. He’s got a Bill Clinton index finger, when it comes to pointing it at others.)

Paul To The Romans 1:

24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity,
so that their bodies would be dishonored among them.

25 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie,
and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions;
for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural,

27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.

28: And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper,

29: being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips,

30: slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,

31: without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful;

32: and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.

There seems to be some eye stying here,

The Bible is a book about Jesus. He said so. More than once.

Interestingly, one of the few passages in the NT that teaches us how and who to judge is ignored:

1 Cor 5 9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. 11But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. 12For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? 13God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.”
